OK, Ive got a bony butt.  :smt003

I've been thinking about upgrading my seat and with the soreness of my butt this morning I think the upgrade is coming soon. So I am asking for help. Assuming $$$ isn't an issue, what do you think is the most comfortable, yet durable, kayak seat made. Of course the reality is that money is always an issue, but I'm at the point to where I will save up to buy the ideal seat.

I think for me the soreness is a combination of riding my bike to and from work 4 times a week and then spending 8-12 hours on the weekend on the kayak. If only I could rearrange my beer belly down to my butt for more cushion....  :smt044

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

Having tried them all the GTS Airwave is my hands down favorite.  The early versions really sucked for reliability however, and I think everyone I sold failed, and was returned.

After that I spent a lot of time on the phone with the guys at Surf to Summit and their new version is much tougher.  In addition, the bladder is removable and repairable, so if it gets a leak its ez to fix.  I have a new gen seat with many unforgiving days and it is still working great.

Surf to Summit seems to be the go to brand. I like the concept of the Airwave, and may go that direction. Has anybody tried the Elite or the Expedition? The Expedition looks like a pretty bomber seat that's made with multi-day long duration paddling in mind, but runs about $30 more than the Airwave. Does anybody know if Outback adventures carries these seats so I can take a look at them before buying?

Would $3.50 seem an outrageous amount to spend for some comfy butt padding??
I purchased an old Hobie high back seat when the Tarpon 16 made it first appearance. ZERO padding but the tall seat was the bomb.
Helped my sucky back a lot.
I like the back support so much I now use it on my Hobie Revo.
I tried the new seat provided by Hobie and it just wasn't doing it for me.
I use this Walmart garden pad for my butt. It floats, doesn't absorb water and doesn't slide around.
Just about as comfy as my Crazy Creek seats which do not work so well on the pedal kayaks.

I also have a bony butt and I will have to say that after 8-10 seats I have still not found one that completely eliminates soreness. The air seats are the most comfortable but not reliable. Having had to paddle home on a deflated seat a few times, I swore never to use one again. So I agree with Mickfish STS GtS pro.

At 5'11 & 143# I guess I qualify for having a bony butt also.  I took a piece of the 3/4" foam that is used as padding in areas where people do a lot of standing - mine was a grey "puzzle piece" from in front of my workbench - and cut a PAC-MAN shape that conformed to the seatwell of my p-15.  With that under my normal seat I'm in good shape.

When I used to do guidework & spend 8-10 hours paddling, all our SIKs were outfitted with these

http://www.seallinegear.com/accessories.asp?Action=DiscoverySeat&Category=Accessories

They also have one that goes on the back of a rigid SIK seat. They were the bomb!
Just allow it to fully inflate, close it, then sit on it & slowly open the valve to get a "custom" fit.
I'm not sure how they would adapt to an SOT seat, but it's another idea.

Plus, they make a decent camp pillow too :smt002.

Thanks for the input!

I've got a gel pad that i currently use on top of my seat that helps some, but I'm thinking that instead of making mods to my current seat, I would rather just get a seat that is comfortable right out of the box. I'm leaning toward the GTS Pro right now just for simplicity and because, knowing myself, I'm likely to puncture an air filled seat tossing it in the back of my truck or shuffling it around with my fishing gear in the garage. Hopefully i can scrape together the $$$ for a new seat before the Islander trip!

Thanks for the help!  :smt006

Thanks for the generous offer Scott! You're in the South Bay right? I'll PM you if I am headed that direction in the next couple weekends.
