Sorry to bring bad news, but Captain Jimmy can't do the trip this year due to insurance woes.  He would have to pay a full year's rider for 2 months coverage,, and he can't do that.

I learned the rider is the same as for dive boats, so I searched the dive boats in Monterey for availability.

Turns out the dive boats need a separate rider for "taking fish."  If they host spearos, it is a different insurance program.

Short version of my epic, is one boat only in Monterey has the proper insurance, and they are not available...DARN.

I'm determined we are going to make this start happening.  It's obvious the interest is out there, and we can fill up the occasional boat.  For the skippers, it should be a no-brainer $$; just got to get the timing right I guess.

Sorry everyone for getting the hopes up.

Oh well, maybe this means I should go to BAM instead?

Drat, I hate getting dry-humped like that!  J/k.  Thanks for looking into it.  On our drive back from Sur this weekend, Kevin and I saw a boat out in the middle of nowhere, wondered where they launched from.  Definitely seems like there is sufficient interest so if a trip could be set up, I'm sure the spots would be filled (and I'll take one of em).

If he does get the insurance next year it is possible he could also get some spearfishing trips put together.

Yes, maybe, though they might need to be separate from the kayaking trips, at least at first as he gets used to the idea of people jumping off his boat into the water.

I'm sorry, Brian, that I couldn't pull it off this year.

I was just trying to provide him with extra justification to purchase the rider for next year. 2 or 3 kayak trips might not be enough, but add in 2 -3 spearo trips and he could even make money.
