Paradise report

Met Rockroach in the parking lot setting up. I had already dropped off my boat, so we chatted a bit then headed for the water. Water was glass most of the day. It was HOT out there tho!! Rockroach and I seperated after trying to jig up some bait. I managed a few on the bigger side, and he lost one, so he went with the posicles he brought, and I went with a little oversized swimmers. I forgot my radio, so we were out of contact for at least a couple hours. When we rehooked up he was towing a nice piece of dinner about 26"es or so. I was empty to this point... We then started slow trolling our way back up stream when I feel a tap, tap, then nothing. I wait,... nothing, hmmm, slowly reel in the line and it feels a little heavy for just bait, so I swing and bendo goes the rod. Get it to the boat and nail her with the gaff, pull her onto my lap and then all hell breaks loose. Starts flappin' and leavers against my leg flings it's self right off the gaff and hits the water running. Lines peeling off as it make a dash for the GGB. After she slows down I worked her back up to the boat and regaffed right in the head, yanked it in and pinned it to my lap. Grabbed the jaw with my gripper and then got the stringer on.  That was a first for me. Pretty funny. I'm sure Rockroach got quite a laugh out of it too. Tip: that's why I always loosen the drag and use my thumb on the spool near the boat. If they go crazy, you can let em run with out popping em off. Then I missed another grab shortly after, bait came up looking like it went a few rounds with Tyson and a nice bite mark right between the hooks. So I changed up and used my last contender in the tube. Rockroach made his way back to beat the traffic home and I stayed till around 3 when the winds came. I caught one more 25"er after he left, so they're still around. Still no camera, so no pics. Had a good time, but felt thoroughly baked by the end of the day....

   Way to go Jonesz, Sounds like it was hot out there today both fishing and weather. Let us know when you plan to go out again.

Had a great time out.  I had my own little fire drill landing my first halibut but I rose above the challenge and got me a 26". More sun than anybody could want (I'm paying for that now) The scene with Jonesz vs. halibut was pertty funny.  One second the fish is in the boat slapping Jonesz around than next second its out.  He was definitely lucky it was still hooked so he could redeem himself and go for a second round.  Good work Jonesz and nice hookset by the way!

Years ago, I had a big halie (27+ lbs) launch off my lap too, but that didn't have such a happy ending.  That fish took off with my stringer and left me with bruises to my hands and ego.  That was my first hard learned lesson about landing halibut and one reason why I have a lot of respect for their power.
