My wife and I launched out of Santa Cruz harbor yesterday at 8:00am. Headed out to mile buoy, already there was a strong southern swell of about 5'.

Lots of PBs catching nothing. Wife found a group of dolphins so she headed off to watch them. Kingfish were eating my squid strips... Hate those frigging things :smt013.

Move out further to some kelp. started jigging. Heard something moving towards me fast, turned to see two seal lions approaching. The smaller female stopped about 20 yards short of me, but the big, big male came at me. He started slamming my yak from underneath and coming up right next to me barking his head off. He kept doing this and I was sure he was going to jump in my yak and bite the crap out of me. :smt012

I decided that I'd better get the hell out of his territory, and with the swell getting taller, I headed back to the harbor. My wife had headed in earlier as she was getting barfy... When I caught up with her she says, "did you see those two seals heading towards you really fast"? Didn't want to freak her out so I just said, "yeah they sure are cute aren't they"?

So no  fish, but a story to tell for darn sure!!

Big Red had a similar incident a few years back. His kayak had a few bite marks  :smt118 at the end of the encounter  :smt011

Glad you didnt get bit. They seem to be irritated with all the kayaks around. I had one charge towards me on Saturday. We were both after the same bait ball and he didnt like me being there. I slapped my paddle on the water and he dove off in a different direction. Kind of spooky for sure.

Spooky story HD.  Those things scare the crap out of me. We had one at West Side Marina in Bodega that took a Twenty plus salmon out of my hands as I was rinsing it off for a buddy to have his picture taking with it . When my buddy got back from his car fetching his camera he didn't believe me until he saw it go up on the dock after someone's cooler.

Blimey, I can imagine that conversation was a bit tense.

"Alright, lets take this pic.....where's the salmon?"

"errrr, a sea lion leapt on the dock and took the fish right out of my hands"................

"seriously, where's my salmon............%$!$!%!%"

Yeah, I'm talking destroying my shorts, staining my seat if that happend to me. I enjoy my high status within the food chain, not so much being part of it!  Although I don't think the sealion would eat me, but i'm thinking maybe chew toy?
