It was 2 islands, 5 days, 180 miles on the boat, 5 fish.  I went down to Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Island with a couple buddies last week.  I shot 4 seabass with the one in the pic being the biggest.  It went a little over 50 lbs.  I was slowly cruising through the kelp on the surface when I came around a corner and saw this beast just sitting there about 10 ft away, facing away from me.  As I lined up on her she flared up all her fins and just started to 1/4 toward me to the right.  I shot her right behind the gill plate and it made a great thwak sound and she rolled on her side and just quivered and slowly spiraled downward around a kelp stalk toward the bottom.  After I stopped hyperventilating I dove on her and sealed the deal with my knife.  The rest of the trip was far less dramatic.  I shot 3 more smaller fish and found a great scallop wall.  Steve shot one and had it tear off, Derek shot one and missed one.  Water temp was 65-67 in most spots.  Never really did find the big schools of fish wer were looking for.  Never made it to the east end of Santa Cruz for yellows but we heard they were going off down there.  Can't wait to go back.

I am sure they were.  Bigeye is an outstanding freediver, and pretty damn great at murdering a wide range of animals and fish.

Awesome fish...were you on a private boat or a charter boat?  If it was a charter boat which one and do you recommend it?
