I was at Honolulu a couple of months ago and attended the 2008 Spam Jam festival and thought Joel and other Spam lovers would enjoy this report. I was never a big fan of Spam until my son was playing Asian Basketball several years ago and the only food they sold at the games was Musubi (Spam sushi). After a couple of years of eating Musubi, I started to really like it so when I had the opportunity to attend the festival, I jumped on it. The food was great although some of the dishes were odd.  :smt005 I thought Joel would be a great candidate for "Mr Spam" and we can start an e mail campaign for 2009. The most popular booth were the Spam sliders sold by the girls in the last picture... no surprise there.

Sorry for focusing on the wrong part of the report but what is "Asian Basketball"?

There are youth basketball leagues which only allow Asians to play. My son is 50% Asian and was allowed to play but you can have only one per team and they have to be less than 6' tall. Seems odd, I know.  :smt012

Thanks for the Report Scott last time I was over there I wanted to go but couldn't convince anyone else.

Cool... I often take Spam Musubi and/or Sliders out for a long day of fishing.  They stick to my ribs and probably my arteries too.  But, I don't care.  I love'em and they're easy to make.

When I go fishing with Harold "Fuzz", our Hawaiian Hapa Haole Spearo Hero, I look forward to him bringing Musubi.

Fuzz is another poster boy candidate for Mr. Spam.

Hapa is the traditional term in Hawaii for 50% asian - 50% caucasian. My kids tell me that me that "Cauc-A-Asian" and "Halfie" are the common terms these days.

gotta love spam musubi.  I alway think of them for Hawaii as hotdogs are to the mainland.

on the hapa thing, I just finished filling out a form for my sons school and the "choose ethnicity" part is getting ridiculous.  For example, under asian was the obvious asian stuff but I never knew I was supposed to identify with my bros in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Russian, Georgia and other 'stans.'  So the basketball league better check the by laws or soon a soviet dream team may show up!

I just clicked multi racial, as there was no hapa group.  one generation more before this whole exercise is futile

Hmm, that is odd and frankly racist.  How many of these are you allowed on a team then (not the bald guy in the suit)?

My wife is a "Cauc-A-Asian" and she has several 100% Asian relatives that are well over 6' tall.   Anyway, if they want a "Short kids basketball league"  than they should call it that and allow any ethnicity as long as you're short.  I know, I know.. it's Hawaii and they do things differently.

Anyway, sorry to rant.  I'm a fan of musubi, but only if you buy it at an ABC store and it's wrapped in seven layers of cellophane with complex directions.

These leagues are in California and have been around for a long time.  Rex Walters (former Piedmond Hills star, U Kansas, drafted by the Nets) played in the leagues in this area.  It does seem wrong to exclude kids based on race.  I was never aware it was a formal rule.

I agree and it never seemed quite right to me also. My son really enjoyed it but I was always concerned how those excluded would feel.
