Capitola Friday

First post here:  I tried out my new fishing kayak today. I dropped it off in the water at the pier around 7:30am. Water was flat calm and the fog mild. Maybe 1/2 mile vis. There were maybe 10 to 15 boats out on the water between Capitola and the Cement ship. Man, I paddled my ass off. At one point I was 3 miles off shore. Never thought I'd do that in a yak. The seals are much bigger at eye level. LOL I tried everything in the book to get something to bite. The only thing I caught was a few jack smelt. I think the moon or the tides were off? I didn't see any of the other boats doing any better. Wind started to pick up a little around Noon and that was it for me. Caught a nice wave on the way in and hit the beach perfect. Man this Yak fishing is pretty fun!

Welcome aboard, Xraykid.  Sounds like you had a great induction into the sport, regardless of the catch.  3 miles offshore is a fantasy that not all of us fulfill - nice work on that.   

Let us know what you're paddling, keep us updated on your adventures, and think about getting some pics on the water - that's my wish list.  My hope is that you enjoy your time on the water, meet some cool folks through this site and the sport in general, and do my wish list too!

welcome aboard xraykid. looks like you got what it takes. 3 mi offshore is going big for a maiden vouyage! The SC/Cap area just screams yackfish, dont it? seems like the fishing was good, catching will follow.
