Tomales Evening

    Had a bitter day on the jobsite so I headed back to the office early afternoon and while there logged on to "the site". Ran across Ravensblack hookup regarding Tomales..........hmmmmmm that might cure the days ills so raced home and tossed the stuff in the truck. On my way over the hill I spotted the fog bank and realized, dam I forgot the compass and gps. Stopped at the general store in the town of Tomales and purchased a $4 compass......better then nothing.
    Arrived at Miller Park to a breezy bay but only about 10 knots. Launched and headed out across the bay. One boat was in the distance but disappeared before I got out there. Trolled out to the bar and turned around and laid out on the kayak and rode the incoming tide all the way past Hog Island  before spotting three kayaks a couple hundred yard further in the bay. Tried to hail them on the radio for nada so I made my way over for some introductions.......RedYak, Ravensblack and his wife Linelle (spelling? sorry). Chatted it up for awhile and decided to make our way back to the launch Redyak headed back out the bay for a little sunset cruise.
     Couldn't ask for a better way to build my spirits. Another Beautiful Evening On the Water!

Nice pics Allen. Good talking to you, Craig, and Lynelle. I talked to four pb's coming in to the ramp before I launched. Two caught nada and two said they "got em". One lady said in addition to halibut she also caught a couple sharks and one ray. Both pb's said the bite was south of marshall inn on the east side of the bay. I went down there for nada but a good evenings paddle. Craig thanks for showing me how to set up the halibut rig and Lynelle thanks for the sandwich.   jim/redyak

Thanks for the pics! It was a great night/ late afternoon on the water. We watched the sun go down with a flock of pelicans flying through the sunset and I have to tell you, this is the higher power lighting up my life. When we were back in the parking lot I felt like I had known these two guys for some while. Laughing and talking fish. We trolled down to pelican point from hog. No hits. A little grass debris in the water made it necessary to check lines every so often.I want to fish reef or launch at salt point on sat am early to dive for abs and fish. Anyone?

Thanks for the report and pictures that prove that it does get calm there every now and again.

If the wind and swell cooperate....I'm up for a it, But I'd need to be off the water by about 9am to get back to Mama and the kid back at camp.  You tell me how early?  (5:45 for a 6am launch) See my post under Kayak Diving.

I need a compass too!

Alan, you've inspired me to attach some kind of manual compass to the yak.

    Juan, We usually carry a manual compass anytime on the bay or ocean but I  forgot it. I really didn't put full trust in the new kiddie compass with the possibility of  interference from FF or battery so I put it through a few circles and all seemed fine. Of course the fog held off the coast.
    I did hear some elk bugling out on the point........kinda cool. Previously I have hiked around to check out some of the boat -in camp sites...........going to get more info on that soon. Anyone else up for it?    Allen

My schedule is messed up for a couple of weeks but I have been wanting to do that.

This is yet another great report of yet another great NCKA hookup - to marvel at how high quality these experiences are is becoming redundant.  Way to go to all who make the effort to meet others and share the fun.

Yeah I saw a sailboat anchor off one of those beaches on the west side of the bay and then row a dinghy to a tent/campsite already set up. That would be cool on a windless day to hit the evening bite, camp out, and then the early morning bite.   jim/redyak

The nice thing about the after-work missions is that you're out on the water at what can be one of the coolest times of the day.  Therapeutic for sure.  Nice report, Allen!

I'd be up for an overnighter. Been wanting to do that for sometime now. You gotta pic your days tho. Hit it during a good fog bank and it would work out, or a real warming trend to avoid the winds. Post up if your planning on it.

Kayak camping in Tomales kicks ass. A few buddies and I did it a couple of years back. You just gotta get a camping and fire permit first, then you can kayak in to any of the beaches north of Indian Beach, which is directly across from Marshall.

Try to plan it when there is an evening high tide. We didn't check the tides and wanted to fish from shore at night, but it ended up being a minus tide and there was a sandbar out about 20 yards that we had to try to drag batrays over and that got old fast.
