ferry point at point Richmond

Went solo at ferry point at 10 am. As I paddled out, I tried to make bait using a sabiki but had no luck there( How do you guys make bait in the bay).  Fortunately I had some frozen anchovies with me and I was able to bait up.  caught and released a 2 foot spiny shark and a stingray which was a first on my kayak.  I released the sting ray which was lip hooked by cutting the treble hook part of the leader and continued using left over hook on the leader. Big mistake that was.  A few minutes later the clicker on my pole goes zzzzzzz.  I fight the fish to the surface a couple of times and see that it is a nice halibut-keeper for sure.  As I try to net him twice the line snaps and fish swims away.   Got tired of the chop in the water and headed for dry land.  I was the only one fishing there for a long time and thought that the halibut had moved on from the area.

Those devil fish are tough as they get by the boat....

 did you lauch straight out of Ferry point and go across the Harbor or did ya turn right towards the San Rafael Bridge?

straight out past the rock wall, past the two pilings that parallel the wall then north to the pilings where the cormorants dry out.  hooked the halibut near the north pilings. 

Interesting,

 I've hooked small ones out there,  It's kinda no mans land in that area, Butt, they seem to be there,

  I've Hooked fish all over from the Island to the Peir, but nothing of any size..

 Love the launch though...

Heart-breaker, yakee.     Thanks for sharing the story.  Keep trying and you'll get it back.  I'll look forward to hearing the tale of redemption later on.   

good to hear they are still there and hungry...bad to hear your line snapped at a crutial time.....I'm guilty of doing that myself and will pay the price of loosing a big fish on day....thenI'llbeCHECKING&changingITeveryFISH!
