Delta in July, week 3 report (7.5 pound LMB)

I continued my search for big fish in the delta this week with several morning trips, and one trip in the evening (plus a detour to Clear Lake).

The morning topwater bite has slowed down quite a bit.  Might be the drop in temps, the wind, or just me.  I am still getting a few good fish for the efforts though.  Most were the typical 1.5-2.5 pounders (pic 1), but they absolutely crushed the popper when they hit, loads of fun.  After the sun goes up, its either frogs on the mats or crankbaits along the vertical weed edges.  The crankbait has been far more effective.

On Wednesday, I got a couple bigger fish just over 3 pounds (pic 2) on the popper.  The big fish slammed it at full speed like a torpedo, then went airborne when it was hooked.   In the evening, I got three fish on the crankbait: 2, 2.5, and 3.5 pounds (pic 3).  I stayed out until dark, and got a much better topwater bite than in the morning.

This morning (Monday) was windy again, and colder.  I only got a few hits on the popper, getting a 1.5 pounder to stick.  Then, I had a big fish nail it near the tullies.  It stripped line, spun me around, tried to bury itself in the weeds; but, it was no use...I had this one.  After a few minutes, it was in the net.  It weighed in at 7.5 pounds, my biggest bass on a popper...what a fun fish (pic 4)!

It's not just you having a slow go at the topwater thing lately.  I think it is the cooler temps.  I'd gladly trade some numbers for a hog though.  Nice fish, that had to be a blast.

The weeds must be taking-over the areas that were open in the spring, making it more the difficult(forArookieLIKEme) to catch fish there.
