Well the day started off good. Meet A NCKA brother who was fishing on A PB. Whats up Irowelikethat! :smt006 Monster Guppy and myself were on the water about 7:15 or so. Started the paddle out the jaws to immediately run into huge bait balls. Kinda scary with all the birds kamikaze all around seals boiling and Power boats racing around. The bait was so thick they were slamming into the side of my yak! Started throwing A Sabiki on A light action spinning rod for buckets of bait. I was setting up another rod with A live choovi and still had the sabiki in the water when Monster Guppy yelled out. Major bendo on my light action rod!!! Immediately grabbed it and I shit you not Salmon on!!!!! As soon as I put tension this fish jumped straight out off the water, like three feet in the air :smt044 He then did A head shake to free himself from the small hook.I did not have my camera ready :smt010.. Oh well. Ended up catching some nice dabs the moved into deeper water. Like 300'. Started catching some Pacific Whiting which was my first time with this species.Sharp teeth the big one got ahold of my finger! :smt011.. Anyway rigged A live smelt on A Hali rig and dropped down. A few minutes the rod went bendo!! After about six minutes into the fight I finally see color!!! HALI???? Nope just A huge Ray!! Super cool tho. After realeasing him it was time to head back in. Had to be off the water at ten. :smt009 Had A wonderfull time on the water with non stop action!!!
..........Sincerly A-Hull Muggle.

Pacific Whiting...cool. Did you get mothershipped out to 300' or just paddle? That sounds like a long way from shore. Nice catch.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Dude! That is a crazy fish. Never caught one. Can't believe you got a salmon on a sabiki too, that is too funny! What a good day.

It drops to 500ft within a mile of the jaws. Real deep canyon.

I caught on of those whitings before while cannonball trolling for salmon.i hadn't buttoned down the drag enough and didn't have the clicker on. i was 3/4 spooled and bottom bouncing when it climbed i was told by the party boat DH it was a hake, which he said was a "trash fish" while throwing it back without asking me if i wanted to keep it. what did they taste like? nice report, thanx.

Great to meet you guys as well,   :smt006 As it turns out we fish 3 times and long with 1/3 the results.not to mention that the pb i was on sucked the gas,  :smt011  its probably cost 10x what you you paid to get there..) yes it was a huge bait ball at least 1/8 mi across.. within 1 hour we had a 100 or so baitfish (chovies, mackerel and a few large jacks, we proceeded to 4 mile to only get nada. we headed back towards the smokestacks,  when we stopped so the captn could relieve himself when I decided to throw my bait over the side. and wack! the worlds smallest shark! lil guy really hit the bait hard, after a few more €(lil larger) sharks my "massive tuna stick" took a serious hit, as I set the hook and yelled out "Gentleman this is NO Baby shark, I think I got the Mama! " as my line went ripping thru the water  from the tension I gave a hood heave and then a 200lb sea lion came shooting out of the water and yelled out a bark, (said FU) and snapped my hali rig leader, sorry, no pic of that... later one guy got a nice salmon, its a shame to have to throw that back... better luck next time I guess.. (without GAS) lol... pics of my mini shark, fishmaster1 and monster guppy headding to the bait and a sign @ port that drew my attention..jeff

Nice a new fish on the site.  I'm sure Mooch will copy those whiting images over to the "a collection of rare things caught from NCKA.org" post of his.

I used to do research on the silver hake ("Altantic whiting") on the East Coast.  They look identical.

I am curious as to how you cook up the whiting and if you like them. I always found them to be a little soft in texture. Did the Salmon take the sabiki or did it hit an anchovy that was on the sabiki? Nice pix and a lot more action than I had a Capitola.

The best way to prepare whiting is to smoke them. They taste just like whitefish without the bones. We used to go out for them on the east coast way back and take them to a deli and trade smoked for fresh fish. It was like a two for one, but it was easier than smoking them yourself. Smoked whiting on crackers with a good beer watching football is the way life was supposed to be lived.

.......... They were hitting makerel on A halibut rig. They seemed to be really deep in around 300' foot of water.
