Hi all,

A week from tomorrow we're leaving for my karate club's annual summer camp, which will be at one of the group sites at Bear River Lake this year.  I fished Bear River one weekend about 15 years ago, but it wasn't from a yak.  I was wondering if anyone had any advice on fishing Bear River in late July...or Caples or Silver Lake for that matter.  I'm bringing three yaks this year, and plan on hitting the water as often as possible.

"Hey, where's sensei?  Training was supposed to start 20 minutes ago!"  :fishing2

Anyhow, I'm open to suggestions and ready for the ample collective knowledge of the NCKA to help me catch something big.  (it's about time I got some AOTY points...pitiful, I tell you. Pitiful.)

Pete

Think deep. Think match the hatch....think planter trout = the hatch.

I dont know these lakes/streams you speak of, but google maps pointed me towards 6000' + elevation near Kirkwood, off the 88. If thats rite the water should still be good and cold . Bowman and Fuller were very cold mid week, while the lakes we fished on the other side (east) of the watershed, Jackson Meadow Res. and even Faucherie (+/- 6400', I think) were considerably warmer.
I wish i had a leadcore setup with me. My goto jig would have to be a gitzit paddle tail natural trout pattern..cast n retrieve, jigged and productive topwater trolling. Small gold/black Yo Zury pimms minnow. The Lake Tahoe Brownie record just fell to a 15+lber on a broken back rebel a few feet down. i believe it was sighted feeding b4 being hooked. Bobber and nymph/woolybugger. thats just the way i roll, im sure theres better advice out there. I remember wishing i had one of those ridiculously realistic planter size trout "replica" swimbaits to try an coax some lunkers.

aahhh, Bear River.  :)
You can't go too wrong there with a 1/2 crawler threaded on a light wire hook and a small dodger. I like the Sep's sidekick dodgers, watermelon and the rainbow trout, (which is a blue/purple pink) for trolling. The 4/0 dodgers are good also. Naked crawlers might be a good thing too.
Kastmasters if you like small spoons, silver, silver and blue and gold are good. Broken back Rapala's work too.
Back where the water comes in from Upper Bear River is a great spot.
