went to hmb with a friend and motored to Pedro Pt. While fishing the point i was pulling bait to the surface and when it got close to the surface i looked down and there was a big trout looking fish. if i was in so cal i would have called it a yellowtail. i dont know what it was but it was like a big trout. maybe a striped bass? it was a couple of feet long and had nice color. not like a salmon though. it looked green on top and had some spots on the back ridge. it would not bite and so it swam off and i casted towards it again to try to get it to come back and it didnt.

we caught rockfish and lingcod but the exciting part was seeing this mystery fish. do large trout go to salt water at all? i am confused but would like to know what that fish was.

Chinook Salmon look very green on the back from above and have irregular spots - I'd bet that's what you saw.

Cool.   :smt001

perhaps even a stealhead....there is a stream on the San Mateo coast that is currently holding some BIG stealhead (8 to 10 pounders) It shall be remain un-named for it's protection from "poochers"  :smt002

In the recent past there's been a lot of coho out there. One of the ways you could tell it wasn't a chinook (besides the way it fought), is that it looked greener than a chinook.

i think this might have been salmon then. it was amazing to see something like this so close to shore. i mean if someone was on the rocks they could have caught it just dropping their line down into the water.

thanks for the info. i hope to see it again someday; )
