I found a Penn "Jigmaster" 500 reel today at a local community fleemarket.  $15 I figured I couldnt go to terribly wrong with this price.  It will need some work however, it does reel fine, but the clicker doesn't operate, the drag is wheel is stuck (tight), and the bail flip lever seems to not operate (possibly due to the tight bail).  I expect to find the innards pretty corroded.  All the bakelite sides are in tact, no cracks, screws in place and not munched up.  Some salt water corrosion on the metal peices.
I think I read on this site a rebuild of one of these things recently, so when I get to the reel, I'll look  again for the article.
I'm looking at this reel as my first step towards fishing out of SC.  (I just need to get past the "sea sick" monster)

Try "Scopace" for motion sickness, many here swear by it. I do......

JP....My favorite old reel...all the parts are available online if you need them.

Look up Alan Tani on the forum for the rebuild thread.

I checked, here it is:

Thanks for link SC!  I used it today (This evening) to see why the reels levels didn't work.  It definitely needed some maintenance.  However, I'm not sure if the model I have is older or newer than the one in Allens tutorial.  My jigmaster 500 S has 3 screws on the left plate, along with the screw to remove the left plate(Key #42)  I was not able to rotate the plate counter clockwise due to corrosion & buildup.  I eventually got the metal plate free, the clicker was rusted/corroded, I sprayed it with tri-flow to loosen it up some and eventually got it move much freer.  I don't have any grease yet, so was not able to lube up the parts.
The freespool lever now operates (Somewhat)  it's not smooth.  I was not able to remove the spool from the right plate (Side with the crank & gears) the spool shaft was stuck in the plate.
I PM'd Allentani with my concern of not being able to remove the spool easily.
So, I put off opening the drag system (As I couldn't get to it easily)until I hear from Allen and what his suggestions may be.
I reassembled the reel, and it seems to operate, albeit really tight now.  Before disassembly, the drag was, none.  Now, I can turn the spool simulating pulling line and turn the clicker on and off.  Doesn't take much on the drag wheel to start locking up the spool so I know it still needs work.

Overall for $15 I'm not disappointed.

I've beating the crap out of both my Penn jigmaster and squidder for 20 years and they never fail.  Just pop them apart, rinse them out, a little lube, and you're ready for the next trip.  Probably not the sexiest reel in the world, but dependable as hell.

:worship  Wow!  In just 7 minutes (+/-)and my reel went from a one way hand cranked winch with no freespool and locked drag, to a fully functional, smooth operating (To me) fishing reel!  New drag washers, greased and lubed up, and ready for action!
Thank you Allen :worship  Great guy!  I just wanted to get the spool to come free, (It was stuck to a pinion gear and took a little prying to get it off) and basically got a new reel back instead.

It was nice to meet you allen, again thank you for taking the time to clean up my penn!

I did stop at FW and had them load it up with Trilean "Big game" 30lb test.  And picked up a little bottle of Corrosion X.

Hi Troy:

It's a good feeling to bring something back from the scrap pile. I
have a Penn 505 and a 9m. I  have been very happy with the price and performance. A trip to Allen's Reel class is a must before fishing season.
