The uni to uni is one of the most popular knots because its easy to learn and strong. Winding more wraps with the spectra will make a stronger knot as does doubling the spectra. There are a lot of knots now to choose from ,the old stand by is the bimini to albright pretty close to 100 percent knot strength. Loop knots like a Bimini twist, double surgeons, or spider hitch add more grip to the slippery spectra when tying to mono or fluoro.

You probably don't want more than 30-40 lb. leader at the most because if you snag bottom you won't be able to break it off. Most guys are using a short section of 20-30lb. mono.

I use a surgeons knot with 25 lb mono. Easiest for me.

An easy one to remember is the "9 to 5" :busy. An uni to uni where you wrap the braid nine times and then the mono five times. I have never had one pull out. Another plus to this knot is that it lays flat so it passes through the guides with ease allowing for easy casting. When I fish I use a six foot leader of 25# fluorocarbon, with my lighter gear I'll downsize to 15-20# fluoro.

Maybe someone should make a knot testing device and bring it to Elk. Might be fun to see who can tie the strongest knot.

I wanted to get one, but they are pricey. I have looked into finding the parts to build a manually operated one. But haven't found the right load cell.

For $2595 I will let the fish determine if my knot was strong enough or not.  :smt002

  Hi guys
My 2 cents I've used the uni to uni for along time then started getting break offs. Braid would cut the mono. I know use Bimini to Albright for long top shots but for short leaders I now use the J knot or J braid it makes a real small knot and goes through the guides well. The J braid starts like a surgeon's knot and then braid the leader and tag end over and under the original loop 5 times moisten and slowly pull tight.
  Tight lines Dale

just use a swivel for the junction and 3-4 ft of mono for the leader-never needed more than that.

That's how I do it for rockfish, heck I even loop the leader on to the swivel to make leader changes knot free. Something to think about when you are out on lumpy water with no sleep and a funky breakfast. But for when I want a longer leader, or don't want a swivel, I use the Alberto knot. So far, so good, though it's just been tested on largemouth.
