Left the harbor at noon and had a light west wind over to pleasure point. Plunked around the kelp and then over to the Capitola wharf. Caught  a medium brown rf east of the wharf-released.
Hooked about a 14# halibut on a fish trap  at the edge of kelp just west of the wharf. There was a light east wind by then and I had to bull it thru the kelp strands a couple times and there were a couple runs to the bottom.  I had it  holding on a taut
t line about 4 feet down, and I was reaching for my gaff when it gave a big head shake as well as a body shake and  so see ya later. So sad.
A light east wind back to the harbor. Had a 3 foot thresher shark jump 40 foot out  in front  of yak off the radio towers.

A perfect day except for .25 seconds there.

A military plane was flying in circles for an hour over pleasure point and Capitola. Imagine what you could do with the fuel money that was burned.

Also the birds were out in front of the harbor.

Sorry about the flattie, at least you hooked one up!  WTG.

The birds are shearwaters and their presence means .....BAIT!!  I love summer.

The plane is those guys that will be burning fuel looking for you if you get lost out there.  Regular training.  sometimes they do night ops, and let out flares on parachutes.  that is really cool looking!

Go back out, now and get one.  Loosen your drag.  LOL

practice makes perfect!  At least you know that the halis are there.  Still, a heartbreaker...

That C-130 is one of my "girls." I used to be a member of the 129th based out of Moffett Field before retiring after falling off of one on the ground. Beat the heck out of my body even though it was only 4 feet. I used to love to fly around the world in them cuz they have a lot of "extras" on board. Miss the missions and my friends.

Hey casey, Congrats on hooking up with a fishtrap. Very honorable way to lose a hali. And no shame in that.
Thanks for the report! Maybe there ARE some fish in Cap+SC?!

Nice report and pics.
When you said the birds were out I think you meant ALL the birds were out.

Casey,

Thanks for the great report and pics. I've just started yak fishing in SC and to date I've caught a big kingfish, two starfish and half a decent buzz... :smt002

To hook a halibut with a fishtrap is quite an accomplishment.... Keep it up!!!

Way to find some action. It looks like things are picking up in my front yard. I saw a post that the bait boat has taken 26 Thresher sharks in the past few days off New Brighton. Did you see any bait out that way?
