On Saturday the 22nd I and my dad took our new Hobie Outback’s to tomales bay to fish for halibut (yum). We launched from the launch point near Nicks Cove, and pelted out to hog island. As we were going there the depth slowly got deeper and we fished in every deep spot we could find in the bay but only caught weeds. What was I doing wrong or was I in the wrong spot please message me where I can catch halibut.

P.s. ( I was using a halibut rig what is a treble hook with a 1/0 hook an inch or two above it and a two oz. ball sinker on a slider  with a herring on it)

Brandon, Hali's usually hang out close to, or in the same spots, year to year. The method is,fish till you find one, mark the spot and go back to it the next time. The buoy area and the depth change from deep to shallow are good places to start fishing.
The area can have a lot of salad, so you have to check your rig often. The rig you are using is fine just change sinkers to accommodate your drift/troll speed so you are ticking the bottom. Maybe try a longer line between your sinker and bait. A torpedo,banana/mooching sinker will gather less salad than a ball.
I think it is still early for that area of Tomales.
