Nice butts.  Sorry about the skunk Scott but I also got skunked yesterday evening at Stillwater as I barely made it out of the cove because of huge waves and wind.  At least I had a good paddle and we will not mind each others smell so much next time out  :smt005 .  I will be out of the picture until the week after Fathers day.  Have fun till then.  I hope to have a report form Yellowstone when I get back.

How do you creata a " Brine"?...

This is what I use for brining herring.

I'd guess 'chovies wouldn't be much different.

Z

Z, I've seen that method before but never tried it.

I just take a pitcher of water and keep adding salt until it no longer dissolves, then I pour that into a ziploc bag with the anchovies.  For convenience, I use little ziploc sandwich bags with about a dozen in each bag.  That way I don't have as much waste.  Wth so much salt in the solution, it will not freeze solid and defrost quickly, but the chovies will be firm.

Hojo, the bait guy loaded us with sooooo many nice chovies --- well over 100 (probably closer to 150 like JTF estimated).  They freeze up nicely in a heavy brine and hold up better than most tray baits.

The reason I asked was how you kept them all alive until you quit fishing. Or did you just fit so many into the bait tube and pack the rest inside the yak?

There's no way to keep that many alive in small bait tubes.  I was using a Hobie Livewell Bait Tank which can hold a lot of baitfish.

Whoa...ChuckE what the h is attached to the back of your ride???  That thing looks like a nuclear reactor (too many movies), seriously it looks like a liquid nitrogen storage chamber that we use to store our microbial suspensions in.  Cool that it can hold so many baitfish and keep them alive.  Especially since it doesn't much to kill off anchovies.

I always release smelt that survive a ARW trip but might try a brining a few big ones so the rockies and lings have a chance to see them too.  Thanks for the brining and Procure tips.

Thanks. Now I know what that thing was at the AOTY awards. Did all that water in the bait tank slow you down much?
