I headed out to Shasta with my son, father in law and 5 other folks for a 4 day houseboat trip
on a way too small houseboat for 8 men. The weather was hot in the 100's and the water was in the low 60's. The bass fishing was good for quantity but not to good for quality and the trout fishing was fair. Ended up with well over a 100 bass and 6 trout between my son and I.
The others were fishing for trout. Seems the best trout fishing was in the morning. The bass you could catch 24hrs a day. This was the first time to Shasta for me and was not to impressed with the bass fishing. But the lake was quite beautiful. Heres a few pictures

Nice looking lake......great report.....thanks for the details!
I think a ride on the SkiYak would have been the cool-off spot!
Did you pull any from those trees?  LakeSonoma has areas like that...I could not find a bass on any of them.

Cool report.  The Malibu-ski looks fun.   :smt001

Did you check out any of the caves and caverns up there?

I houseboated up there 25 Summers ago with my uncle and his insane friends.  Lucky I lived to tell about it...

Same here, only it was 30+ years ago.  If anyone was around back then and saw a 16 year old kid slalom skiing naked, it wasn't me.  Honest.  :smt003

Gotta love the 70's...  :smoke

Nice report!

Adam yea we did get some off the trees they were suspended 15 to 20 ft above the bottom.
Some of those trees are in 70 ft of water. The deepest bass I got was 70 ft deep he went into a frying pan that fish would not have made it back.
We parked the houseboat on the Pit River. When we arrived the other already had moved the houseboat thats why I had to tow the yak. I tried to convince my son to go for a ride in it but he just gave me a funny look. I covered the Pit and McCloud rivers. I did not go to any caves.
But I did go to Merle Haggared old bar at Silverthorn Marina. Usagi no naked boy But a lot of almost naked girls everywere. Got to love the 2008's.

Good ol' Shasta. Nice report!
I need to get up there; grandma lives nearby.

My dad is up there now with his buddies - they've been doing the houseboat thing up there every year for decades. I'm sure they're very well behaved; after all, what kind trouble could a bunch of retired old firemen possibly get into....?

Funny thing about shasta, the bass fishing is almost TOO good.  I've always thought that there are descent quality bass there, but you can never get anything past the hordes of little guys.  The lake is jam packed with little fish.  Mom and Pop gotta be in there somewhere...
Never trust a man that doesnt like to fish...

I miss my week long camp trips on the McCloud (All the way up to the bridge then back 1/2 mile or so.)  I don't miss the wake boarders, jet ski's water skiers, and general boaters that use the open area below our camp site as the turn around.
The wildlife there is nice and so are the bikini's

Our last trip there, we couldn't keep the fish off our hooks!  Every cast resulted in a hookup!  Drove the one boat that was anchored when we arrived crazy as they weren't getting bite one, and we show up and  its fish after fish after fish! Both of us! It was crazy, best fishing I've done yet!  Buddy landed a 22" rainbow on UL & 4lb test!  That was exciting!
I'll get back there some day soon with the kayak!
Trout, SM LMB all morning long!  And one squaw fish.  We kept the 22"er, a few trout and a few SMB.
It was nice to "Jonez" another boat!  As I've allways been the boat getting "jonezed"

I lived in Redding for 4 years.  Did a lot of bass fishing there from the bank, never anything over 5 pounds.  A bass pro friend use to let the small ones eat the jig (ultra lite weight: 1/8 oz, yamamoto grub, double tail), and let them shake it and spit it out without setting the hook.  He would let several bass do this on one drop, then set the hook on a better thump and bring in 3-4 pounders instead of the smaller fish.  Amazing technique.
