Hi Yakers:

Anyone know how to rig a top Hook to slide down the Leader so I may Adj. the Stinger Hook  to top Hook spacing to match Bait?
                                                                           Thanks

What keep the bottom hook from sliding off?  Do you just tie some kind of finishing knot once you know what length you want the stinger?

maybe you did not have your coffee yet?  you are confusing the mainline with the snell line.

the mainline is tied to the terminal (fixed) hook, not the sliding one.

it does go through the eye of the sliding hook.

the sliding one uses its own little fragment of line to attach it to the main line.

you can use lighter line for the sliding snell hook fragment.

I used to use these on the Smith for back bouncing roe. I've had the best luck with line of the same diameter. Bigger line makes it slide easier and smaller a little tight you can adj by how hard you snug it up or the number of wraps but I like to leave the guess work out and snug it up tight. we would have the hooks facing opposite directions

Well, I did my best to use the above tech but my success rate for a clean snell is still at 50% or so. My fingers are too fat or something. I did find a new technique (to me at least) to tie them that's much easier. Just thought I'd share.

hmm, another guy that forgot his coffee, and in the same thread!

well part of the problem Z with why your SLIDING snell is not working very well is that that video is for a fixed terminal snell, not a SLIDING snell.  :smt008

I thought they had coffee up there in the pac nw!  :smt044

I wasn't having a problem making it slide, I was having a problem holding and tying the line. This video has a little different technique that worked better for me.

You're a smart guy J, I thought you could make sense out of what I was saying. :smt002 For the slider all you need to do is skip the hook eye, make the loop, wrap the line 3 times, slip in the mainline, finish the wraps, back through the first loop made and tighten. Then do the fixed snell after that. And voila! It's a sliding snell!

X-tra note: Some people use dacron for the line that secures the sliding hook since it won't "burn" the line when moving.

And yes we do have coffee up here and it ROCKS!!! :ball

The back hook can be tied with whatever knot you want palomar, clinch, trilene, etc. Some prefer a loop knot for less stress on the bait but tie on the slider first.

If you know someone who ties flies, ask them to show you how to whip finish.

To wind the "sliding snell" on right handed holding hook with left hand winding to right

thread your leader through the hook just past the hook bend

with your tie line  make a big loop 4-5" diam.and  pinch at the eye with your left hand

with your right hand stick 3-4 fingers inside the loop and wind it around the hook shank by rotating your wrist

pinch the snell coils down with your right hand and tighten by pulling the tag end with your left hand

then pull the leader out farther to tie the stinger hook on

I like to use this snell from the link, easy for my fat fingers and hasnt failed yet.  Then again I dont tuna fish. http://www.fishingkites.co.nz/fishingknots/snell_fishing_knots.html

I used a magnifying glass on a store bought halibut rig and it looks like they simply thread the top line, then using a seperate piece of mon tie a uni knot over the hook and mainline.  I havent gone fishing with this rig yet, so its still untested.

My 2 cents

I like to tie my own stuff, I use a fly tying vise to hold the hooks, even tho I don't tie flies these little vises are great.

but then again,

Take a look at the Owner Boa rig, the slider on them is worth the money to buy a few then alter the bottom to whatever you want.
