Headed to New Brighton early this morning for a run and swim.  Saw a few people fishing.  Conditions were sweet.  Good clean water with ankle slapper surf.  One surfcaster about 1/4 mi north of the cement ship seemed to do pretty well.  He had a 3/4 limit of hubcap BSP, each at least a foot long and THICK.  couldn't tell what kind of bait he was tossing.  Another man throwing a C-rigged plastic wasn't doing any good.

Saw a super-tanned kayaker in a malibu going out for halibut.  Reminded me of Dallas Raines from Channel 7 Weather (for all you fellow LA heads, like GB2 :smt044)  He doesn't post here, but i wish he would b/c he said he had the place dialed in.  Weather was fantastic at 0800.  he went out in nothing but a neoprene body glove vest and shorts.  with the flat surf, he paddled out on his KNEES, stood up to adjust gear aft of his seat, then paddled off to the mile buoy.

I could only stand ~ 10 minutes of exposure without a wetsuit, even after running, and I had to call it.  Just too cold.

Oh, and the kelp was pretty think already.  You could definitely see the growth out by Capitola reef, which is much different than just two weeks ago.  If conditions are like it today, I bet crapitola will kick out a few legal lings.

My fellow Asian brother, I'll take that bet....

If you catch ONE legal ling at Crapitola, I will slap you in the ass - for a job well done   :spank   AND give you a great deal on a new Tri-suit at Aquan - I know you need one :smt002

It could happen.
Last year I caught a 29", 9lb ling directly off Seal Rock in mid May-yes Mooch, from a kayak.
With all the rental skiff traffic & the WSB free divers I figured that spot was only good for little blue RF and 30lb halibut :smt003. It was a surprise, but strange things can happen on the big blue.

I've done it... caught a legal ling off capitola reef.

I'll do it again this year.  The reward of having Mooch touch my bum is just too much to resist.

Hey Yak. I met that guy plenty of times @ Capitola and he knows what he's doing. Saw him w/ some fatty rockfish and a few portly flatties. Talked about NCKA but he seems to like the solitude. Anywho, learned a bit from him when I first started yakfishin and also that kelp can turn out some nice fish. Just gotta work to get it dialed first.

In 1983 I saw some guy catch a 15 lb ling off Santa Cruz wharf.  That was a weird happening, but then again it was 1983.

Good luck and tight lines.

yeah, that was me taking my lab for a dip.  he's a pretty good swimmer, and so am I so no worries about him getting munched by a sneaker wave.  anyway, it was like a lake out there yesterday.

I'm actually surf fishing there tomorrow morning on my way back home to bako.

good luck.  how about a post after you hit it.

I was on the Capitola pier today. A guy had a 31 inch, 11 pound Ling that he caught nearby. They're out there.
