Dude, what a bummer  :smt011

That ramp is quite a piece of engineering,  but when I saw the picture all I could think was "damn, if I got a skateboard on that thing, I'd sooo break bones".
I had a boarder friend in high school who broke wrists & arms on at least 3 different occasions. He was known as "the guy with the cast" until senior year.

Wish we all had adamantium skeletons so we didn't have to put up with this darn time consuming thing called "healing".

I'm sure you had some EPIC air before things went sideways on you.
Totally how I envision it too :smt002

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Allen, & we'll save some rockies for you.

What a bummer, Allen! :smt010 You should probably stick to fishing! :smt044 Heal well so you're back in your yak soon. BTW, do you have an NCKA sticker on your cast?

Oh man, this really sucks Allen.  There is nothing anyone can say that will make the process of healing faster.  It's all up to you and from what I've known of you I'm sure you will be alright soon.

Crazy stuff.  This last wednesday night I go to drink at a pub in the rockridge district of oakland. I go here once a week or so and when I do I usually ride my skateboard.  Not a big fan of dui's.  So, me and my friend left the bar after numerous beers and shots of whiskey and good times and proceeded to shred our way to a sushi joint on telegraph.  There is a nice downhill on 51'st street and I'm in front going really fast in the dark on the sidewalk.  All of a sudden, I'm flying through the air with drunk limp body and land on my left side arm and hip.  Ouch!  I rode right into a cutout of the sidewalk where a tree had been before.  Amazingly I only sprained my left wrist a little, and had two raspberries on my elbow.  I did get up and manage to brush myself off.  I wish the same could of happened for you, just a scrape and a bruise.

Get well soon Allen.  JTF

Wow, that sucks Allen!  Hope you heal quickly.  Don't worry about typing slow; a lot of these guys read slow, so it'll all work out okay.   :smt002

Alan~
The very start of my NCKA days was a fishing tourney at Santa Cruz almost 3 years ago.
The FIRST guy I met who had anything to do with the tourney or NCKA was YOU around 4:45 in the morning in the parking lot at SC. We actually talked for quite a while and you made a guy who didn't know anyone else who kayak fished feel right at home.
Then we bumped into each other chasing diving birds during the tournament. I mentioned I forgot my Sabiki and without hesitation you offered one to me.
You are a HUGE reason why I have been so invloved with NCKA and will continue to do so.
Heal fast and come back strong my friend.

Alan-

I remember talking to you about that ramp at the awards ceremony. Too bad you don't have video of the breakage. That would be something to see. Bad timing though. I know you'll recover fast enough. I remember a friend of mine wanted to do some crazy trick. He zoomed up to a bench, jumped off the board, ran on the bench and jumped back on his board... fell on his ass... We all laughed our asses off... He stands up saying something is wrong... we're still laughing eventhough he had a broken wrist. That was great. I'm sure your fall was even better. After you heal... we'll have something else to laugh at.

Take it easy,

Freddie

AAAAaaawww.....  such nice replies.  thanks guys and gals, just what I needed.  surprisingly, I'm not really too bummed out about the whole deal. Yeah, it's damn inconvenient, but coulda been way worse, and accidents DO happen, though I'm usually pretty good about avoiding them.

Yes my plans need to be quite different for the next few months (gonna miss 3 weeks guiding in Ketchikan during King season with Howard the most), and I'm scrambling to get a few local clients covered, but I kinda like 'different,' puts a little of the mystery back into life.  what's going to happen next?

You can all have fun gauging my recovery by the type and size of fish I catch.

This will also give me time to work on some other projects as well.

I'll post a separate thread on this,  but real quick, who's down for an overnight mothership trip down to Big Sur?  Maybe in June? or July? I could be deckhand for all the yakkers.  Kenny and I talked about this last year and now with salmon season kaput, I know he is looking to get creative?

I think with 12-15 people, we could pull it off.

Anyway, I learn more on Friday when I see the doc again for my permanent cast or brace.  Pain is under control as long as I take my meds on schedule, but that's all I can do right now. lay around and be medicated.  To think I used to pay big bucks for this  LOL.

If it's not too macabre, I'll see if I can scan the x-rays in and post.....

Thanks for all the good thoughts, my friends, and catch one for me.  If you are feeling really good, release one for me.

Allen
