I've been very excited about the rockfish opener and it is my first time fishing on the ocean. I came home today and my wife started talking about the fatal attack today. It was very big news on tv. Ohh well, if she thinks i'll be eaten she will be nicer to me before I go.
Everybody dies, not everybody lives. What did you do today?

I hear they prefer swimmers and surfers. Kayakers generally don't taste good or smell good after a day on the ocean.

Yes, my wife was freaking out about that attack as well. I told her that he was swimming, not kayaking..

And they only like red and yellow yaks, mine's blue :^))

Too bad about this fellow.  The fact that he survived long enough to get to the hospital suggests he could have survived with adequate compression to the wound.  I'm sure the femoral artery was severed, but focused pressure might have contained the bleeding unless the artery retracted back into the abdominal cavity, which would have precluded any chance of staunching the flow.

I'm sure a former combat medic like Frank would have had a good chance of saving this guy.

Man, I wonder if we are headed into a new era, where the GWS and it's food are protected and they are

both in numbers that are prolific....

Is there some sort of agency that is trying to figure out Numbers of GWS out there and seal populations?

I have read news reports on the web where one calls this latest shark incident a "grey" shark attack while another states it was a Tiger shark - all being recorded here under the GWS attack today subject line.

I have not seen one report yet where an expert has attributed it to a particular shark via identification from bite wounds. Anybody out there read a report that offers anything truly definitive in that regard?

Nope, no conclusive shark id so far that I've read.
I would bet dollars to doughnuts it was whitey though.

<edit> Geeez, this is the one in Mex you are talking about, I was still thinking of the SD attack from last week. I guess that far down, it could well have been a tiger.

It's too bad he was not closer to a hospital, they may have been able to save him.   It sounded like he was doing what he loved to do but definitely snuffed out way to soon. :smt009
