Omar Conger I think the guy's name was...  Glad I never knew about it when I was diving at Pigeon back in the early 90's.

Good luck out there, Guys!   :smt002

Right now I'm in a slight amount of limbo regarding the opener. If work has me going to France on the 3rd, then I'll fish on the 1st. But if I'm not going to France, then I'll be in Ontario through the 2nd  (I just found out about this today). So I'll either be out on the 1st or the 3rd.

Either way, I do want to try out Pigeon Point. The protection from north-northwestern swell is amazing. The entire coast from Santa Cruz to San Gregorio was churning on Sunday, but there were just little tiny wavelets breaking at the PP launch.

Regards,
Scott

If you could tolerate the company, I'd like to try PP also.  sounds like a nice launch

Launching early out of SC Harbor, weather willing. I'll probably paddle out the mile bouy, then pick a direction. Been looking forward to this all winter.

Company is welcome.

Hi Everybody,

I'm new to CA but not to kayak fishing. I would love to hook up with some of you guys for the opener. Most of my fishing/kayaking experience has been along the gulf coast of TX so I have a lot to learn about the pacific ocean and its fish. I am pretty good with a paddle but I don't have a clue how to fish out here.

Scott, do you mind if I show up at Pigeon point?

Welcome to the Nor-Cal Madness!  You're in the RIGHT PLACE to quench your fish-yakin thirst! Be safe and be sure to sit and watch it for a while before launching into the SURF ZONE....and ALL the OTHER SAFTEY stuff too.
See you out there, somewhere soon!

Brian,

Welcome !! I don't mind a bit, but keep an eye on the hookup forum for more up to date info. I'm even further in PS limbo, as I'm definitely not going to France or Ontario next week, and for about 5 minutes thought I was going to Virginia, but am currently not booked at all next week.

So uminchu informed me that Stillwater north is within  the new yellow closure area.  I am assuming he is correct on this, but the forcast for the 1st is wind.......damn it :smt013.  I'm gonna be on a weather watch for going north.  Otherwise I will fish for halibut.

Haha, not likely that I'll be fishing the opener (possibly never again) :smt003

My wife is scheduled to be induced on May 1st which means I won't be fishing the rockfish opener until my daughter is old enough to fish it with me on her birthday  :smt004 (if I'm lucky)  :smt003

Have a great time out there guys. Hope you slay 'em. Somebody bring me some rockfish. I'm dying for fish tacos  :smt010

Think good baby thoughts for me out there while you are rippin' lips  :smt006

I'm keeping an eye on the weather.
I'll probably try & fish Friday if things look good & I get the day off. Would prefer to try north of Cruz like Davenport, etc. but might just get lazy & do the harbor thing since I haven't been paddling since October :smt010
I'll be watching the hookups too, & chances are I'll see someone out there.

Jim, where'd Naoaki get his information?  The most southern YRCA (Yelloweye Rockfich Conservation Area) is just south of Fort Bragg.

Here's the link to DFG regarding yelloweye closures.
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/yrca.asp

and here are the maps of the actual YRCAs from North to South.
