i got certified a couple of years ago and then let it lapse. as i recall, it doesnt matter whether the guy is breathing without a pulse or has a pulse but is not breathing. the response is always the same as that of a well seasoned hooker. PUMP AND BLOW.

I've been an EMT and CPR, ACLS, PALS and NRP instructor for about 8 years. Saved a bunch and lost a bunch, and like it's been said on here earlier, out of hospital resuscitation rates are about 7%, but that's better then nothing.  I recommend everyone review http://handsonlycpr.eisenberginc.com/ for the new hands only cpr, it makes it much more accessible for the layperson to do with out the fear of disease transmission.  I've worked in the field or in a ICU for a long time, and can tell you that CPR ain't pretty, but it's nice to have a save now and then.  If any has any questions or needs a unofficial course (i'm military and can't give out cards to civilians) around the Vacaville/Fairfield area let me know.  Some people get hung up about getting the "card" after passing a course, but that card won't save your ass when you need the knowledge.

OK, subtract 1 from the "no" and add 1 to the "yes". Completed First Aid, CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator). Received 2 year certification :smt002.

I am CPR certified and more. I also carry an EPIRB which is another must have in a medical emergency situation.

It's nice to see that many of you are PREPARED.

For those who are not (like myself), I'll be arranging a First Aid / CPR Cert class with one of our dive instructors at Aquan soon - details to follow.

Stay safe out there my brothers and sisters.....last thing we all need is to attend a funeral....especially if the tragedy could have been prevented.

Wow,
Great thread! Between Boy Scouts, the burn center, acupuncture college and asst coach at a birth (just one class there), I don't recall how many certifications I sat through.  Then a few weeks ago, I see the big news splash "compressions only on adults".  Those recent certifications sure help your liability, especially for anyone with professional training.  More cops, fire and rescue have let me walk before reports were written (while the wheels are still spinning) once they got there and found me pumping a chest or pressing on bleeders.  I clearly state my training and desire to avoid being sued.
It's a bummer to have to do it and a blessing to be able to.  I always ask the local paramedic when I have first aid questions and Danglin covered it on the first page.
A few kayak fishing related deaths I've heard about could have been the result of heart attacks but the guys were alone anyway.

Danglin, whaddya think about field defibulators in every glove box?

I'm not sure on what the protocol is for " Just Anyone " to own or use one of these...

I've worked 9 different counties, It is just Amazing to me How different each county is,

It's like they all wanted to reinvent the wheel or something... :smt005
( and not easy for " My Old Gray Cells " to separate these in my head,  OUCH!!! :icon_weelchairbb:
       My Brain Hurts.... )

Anyway, if we could have them, if it was your standard Heart Attack with V-fib or Pulseless V-Tach,

Then that would be great,  Early Electricity is Very Effective,

But, Reality is, Many more things need to happen after that,   and soon..........

Again, one of the best things we can carry is a nice warm blanket ( in vehicle of course ) ,

Hypothermia is one of the major concerns in Relation to Trauma,

Direct Pressue on Serious Bleeders and Tourniquets are a last resort.....

I love the Days from " Johnny and Roy " from the hit Show " Emergency " where  " Rampart " gives

the order for " D5w Ringers lactate " and a IV Cures All.... Blame that show for where I am now....

Kind of Kool though, we have recorded the Fire tones from the show and that's what goes off

when we get a call ... :fire

As a lifeguard for County and State Parks for around 9 years and 30 years with Santa Barbara County Parks I was current until about 15 years ago.   During that time I used it twice, once successful.  It would be good to renew my skills and learn the new methods and techniques.

In my backpacking guide days I maintained my qualification as a Wilderness First Responder (WFR). That has since lapsed, but I still keep my first aid and CPR up to date because my work offers it for free each year.  :smt002
