Being a part of the water sports industry and seeing more and more people (young and old) getting into the water with little or no experience, I've often wondered if any of our NCKA members are actually familiar with CPR.

It is promising to see more newbies taking the time to find a kayak that suits 'em well and also take classes on proper paddling and safety skills. BUT more importantly, will there be anyone in a given group of kayak fishermen on a typical hook-up day, be able to properly administer CPR when the shit hits the fan???

Something to think about...don't you think?  :smt045

Beacuse I love my NCKA family, I will make an effort to take a class  :smt008

Am I currently certified in CPR.. no.

However, in a previous life (the high school and college years) I was a life guard and water safety instructor. Basically, if the American Red Cross offered it I either taught it or at least had taken the class.  I probably should have kept up on my certification, but having had to take cpr and first aid every year for about 10 years I grew kind of tired of it.  It's probably time for me to reconsider signing up for a class.  Thanks for reminding me.

Not certified. Don't really plan on being certified. I do occasionally read up on the current thinking regarding the ratio of breaths vs chest pumps (it's changed over the years). I can tell you from personal experience that if I find you without a pulse and not breathing, that I am capable of getting you pink again, prior to the arrival of the professionals.

Tell you what though - arrange for a CPR course for NCKA at Aquan, and I'll make arrangements to be there.

Vince at Aquan had a certified CPR instructor give lessons to the employees last year for a minimal fee. I was invited but couldn't make the date at the time - I regret it now. Anyway, I'll ask if it can be offered to NCKA members this year.

Uh.... ya :smt002

No problem, I get ya going and "Spider" will swoop in and take ya away...all good... :smt004

But Seriously, A couple of simple things to have on hand and think about,

A Blanket,  Hypothermia is one of the major problems after a traumatic event,

Pocket mask with a airway adjunct (OPA) ( Oral Pharyngeal Airway )
   to maximize your breaths...

Precardio thump,  Slamming your fist on pulseless victim's Chest,
This may work if you " witness " a person go unconscious and there is no pulse

Keep up with compressions and breaths, it's going to be sloppy, that is just the way it is out in the field

 Also remember,

Cold water immersion drownings have a better chance of survival that just a normal " on land " Codes,

Don't give up.....Especially with the younger ones,

We had a Code at a Giants game @ Candle Stick ( hx. Imatrex use for Migranes :smt009)

Close to a hour of CPR,

Many Shocks, and tons of drugs,

26 y/o Female Lives, and not only that, no deficits, only that she could not remember the last
2 weeks prior to the event and now has a on demand pace maker,
        Koolest call to date......... :smt004

But,   Nothing takes the place of getting some " Hands On Training ",

Nice to have a Little Confidence in these situations.......... Danglin

You can't be a responsible operator in this industry without at least a basic red cross CPR cert. They have to be updated every year (3 yrs for first aid). My biggest fear is having to pull limp lifeless child out of the water. I want to know that I know what to do in a split second even if in panic mode, that takes rehearsal and practice. I cover CPR in my rivers2sea program. Nothing official but we go through a whole rescue scenario and how to handle an incident on the water. You older fellas reared on bacon, sausage, and margarine could have "the big one" any day out on the water. Wouldn't you be more comfortable knowing your fishing buddy will be right there huffin and puffin as he draws you back from he light.  :smt059 :smt056

As a teacher, I have to be certified.  I take a class every other year.

The wife thought it would be a good idea with the arrival of our first child so we took one together.  It was a refresher for me and and an eye opening experience first time for her.

I don't know how long certification lasts but I have certified numerous times over the last 20 years.

When someone drops from a heart attack and has no pulse/breathing it is extremely rare to save them with cpr. Someone that has just gone under water and has no pulse/breathing has better odds of being restarted.

The red cross will put on classes and they are worth your time.

Not certified but I have used it on 2 people and saved their asses.
Maybe at an event Danglin and Hydro Spider could run a class.
I would of course pay them with beer.

My previous job required all of us to have a current CPR cards, yearly certifications in first aid and CPR.  I am not certified now, but, after having it drilled into me for 5 years straight, I can perform it.
Fortunately I've never had to test my skills.

I lifeguarded in undergrad at UCLA  :smt007 :smt007 :smt007.  I also held EMT-B, but let that lapse a bunch of years ago.  I think i've still got the ABC routine down, but could use a refresher.

I've let my training/certification lapse & wouldn't be confident if I needed to use it. Thanks for the reminder.
