Studying this page - http://www.garlic.com/~triblet/swell/abglance.html#144hours - I see a volatile forecast, but there's hope!  Friday morning early looks OK swell-wise, and winds are usually light just before the bigger water approaches the coast, which looks to happen Friday afternoon.  Saturday looks potentially rough, but NWS has it looking maybe do-able...  Sunday morning looks good again, and, again, the afternoon kicks up.  This is NOT a typical Summer pattern of calm mornings and windy afternoons - these are little fronts that are hitting the coast farther north (OR and WA) with the the "tails" dragging through northern California.  Rain-wise it looks like not much will happen here, but the wind and swells rising and dropping so quickly is very tricky.  It is NOT the type of forecast that I look for and make plans based on, but yesterday was a similar window, and it turned into a very flat day with very light wind off of Eureka.  The "abglance" page, as I call it because of that word in its address, is very consistent and doesn't tend to change much - as opposed to the NWS forecast...  Watch the NWS forecast flip-flop for the next few days - it usually becomes more "like" the abglance, but obviously they're different types of forecasts and hard to compare.  Thursday looks like the best day this week...  Let's see how things look later today and into tomorrow morning.  Keep those fingers crossed!   :smt001

Again, the (next) latest NWS forecast...

Honestly, this is the type of forecast that could provide some opportunity, or it could be crappy...  It's DEFINITELY better than last weekend's forecast!   :smt001

There are NO guarantees...   :smt009

...but I think it's likely I'll make a try at the Cove this weekend.  It depends on the wind and swell forecasts as the time gets closer.

Who might be in?  Etienne?  Doug?  Pat?  Hawk?  Alex?  Scott?

The tough thing is - who knows how nice/nasty the following weekend will be?...   :smt012

I'd like to make a try, but really wish there looked like at least two days that looked potentially doable.  I'd have to come up early Fri and so I'd potentially miss the window Friday, and if Sunday was rough, it would be a wash.  Of course we can't know the next weekend weather either, but I'm kind of leaning toward taking my chances then.

That might not be a bad idea, Doug.  The last two fishable days down there no fish were caught based on a Coastside report...

Right now I see that my usually solid abglance page has changed a bit to match NWS...

More later!   :smt001

Eric,

My backup consolation, if no salmon, would be some crabs as I just got two traps from Sean.  Can you tell me what the chances are of getting crabs up there now?

Doug - I don't have the crabbing details dialed in at all for the Cove.  I know the locals are doing well, but I think they run a couple miles south and work it hard...  I think it's likely we'd have a fair chance in closer, but I really don't know.  You can buy them from the locals on the beach, but I don't know if it's a decent deal or highway robbery...

Last year I paid 5 bucks each.  Not a bad deal for a large crab!

NWS is making Saturday look like a potential window, but it calls for larger swell Sunday.  I still believe the abglance view of Sunday being 5-7'...

I was all the way out in Whitethorn today but couldn't make it down to the cove as much as I wanted to. I'm working this weekend and every other one for the foreseeable future so it will be midweek or bust for me. I've dropped pots out of Trinidad twice in the last two weeks for nada. The peak of crab season was over in December so it's slim pickins now. If anyone gets desperate and absolutely must try for a Salmon before season closure then I have a tanker of a double Kayak that can handle the roughest of waters. Two might be better than one when it gets down to crunch time. Me #1 coolie boss, you get the glory but it will cost you a limit of tasty Salmon   :smt008

I can't make it this weekend  but I could make it on the  weekend of the 28th.

The flip-flopping by NWS regarding Sunday is pretty hilarious...
