Those appear to be grey market cameras, shipped from out of the country. That can cause a problem with warranties down the line. So you have to ask yourself if $32 is worth the potential hassle down the road. Current amazon price is $246 with free shipping - http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-Optio-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B000LXZYKW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1204855744&sr=8-1

these guys are $199 with $15 shipping so $214 total.

Sure.....now you tell me Bill.  :smt010 I guess it's going to be a wait and see.

If you click on the Optio and 16gb, they will take you to the sites.

CHEERS!

Bill, how does one tell if they are grey market?  According to the site, the company is based in Washington state.  I guess that might not mean much.

Even with the U.S. warranty, you still have to practically pull teeth to get Pentax to fix anything. I returned my camera FOUR times before they finally fixed the video problem. Video is not my reason for buying the camera, but if it's there, it should work properly.

16 GB...Dan, you can probably fit 1000 thousand pictures at max resolution on it, or a full day's worth of video.

One of the reviews for the memory card said they got 3000 pic's or 120 minutes of video. Yeah baby! Guess I can download the camera once every other year.

Wow 16Gb!  I can shoot 1 hr of vid on my 4Gb.  I think your battery will go befor the memory card fills up! lol.
Hopefully you'll never have to deal with any kind of warranty issue!

Cool, Dan.  I'd like to check it out next time we get together.  I'm due for the waterproof level of protection.   :smt001

:smt006 Congrats on your Optio, Dan!

Despite any possible Pentax service issues, (and I don't know what "grey market" is, really) the Optio that I got on Amazon for $200 about two months ago is a great little camera, with intuitive menus/controls, and I really love it.

A kayaking buddy O' mine has had an older model Optio for years, without any problems, and he set the settings on my camera to help save battery life, take better pictures on/in the water, etc., and he uses his Optio underwater a LOT.

Well, now we'll all be expecting some feature length videos from you.
(Heh heh) You might want an extra battery someday, but I can shoot lots of pics with just the one battery, depending on the settings. I like the fancy protective case for this camera too, about $30. but worth it.

Cheers, -HobieSport

Grey market (for camera gear at least) means equipment that is purchased out of the US then imported/shipped to the US. This means it does not carry a US warranty and in many cases you get things like UK English manuals. Those sketchy NYC electronic stores are full of this stuff. It doe not matter where the company selling it is located, it matters where the gear comes from. I have no way to prove this is grey market but here are the general tip-offs:

1. A lot cheaper than the generally cheapest choice (Amazon)

2. Comes from a company that specializes in selling non-US equipment or to non-US customers.

There is nothing wrong with grey market as long as you are aware you are getting grey market and are taking a risk.

Thanks Bill,

Yeah, and some of those those discount NYC stores can be really sneaky, too, enticing customers in with discounts and then selling us stuff we don't need, and you actually end up paying the same or more than at your local friendly neighborhood camera store.

Just like buying discount Kayaks.  I got my Hobie from KFS, but now I wish I had bought locally, from WindToys in Santa Rosa, (for Hobies in my area) or supporting great folks like Sean and Hawk for example. Windtoys would have given me the same or better discount that I got from KFS, and would give great customer service.  I was a newbie (still am) so live and learn.

For a camera, I think ideally now I'd rather pay a little more, with a reputable local dealer with a name and face.  Just my .02, as usual.

Thanks to all for this thread. I'm thinking about going to the "waterproof level of protection" too, and was looking at the Optio.
