Have any of you saltwater flyrodders found a good solution for holding your rods in a milkcrate? I have found the cork handles all tend to flare out near the reel making traditional PVC solutions less effective. You can get them to work, but they tend to damage the cork.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Marc

After the caffeine started to kick in I thought this might not be the correct location for this question. Sorry.

It's fine Marc, this is probably the best spot for it.

Now if I could only help you. Having never even used a flyrod I don't know how valuable this is but I have seen a few guys use the Scotty mount rod holders on there crates.

I know scotty makes a rodholder for fly rods... if you can mount it on your crate... that would be the solution.

I have a Scotty on the forward section of the kayak and find them to be a little less than easy to get out. I am searching for an easy in/easy out solution for the milkcrate. Of course, the rod will also be tethered.

Thanks to all!
Marc

So could you just get larger diameter PVC and make a vertical slice down it to hold the rod better?

Those wonderful flyrod manufacturers think that a flared cork looks better and therefore justifies the 50-100% cost adder they apply to all flyfishing equipment.  The flare on the cord in relation to how the reel seats creates the problem. Even a 4" tube would have the same problem.

I have been trying two different ideas. First, locating a plastic rectangular tube (or two L's) that would enable the entire thing to be slid down into it. Problem....can't locate anything in any dimensions that work. Second, using two half moon pieces of PVC that would be offset at the top and bottom. This works marginally well - tends to slip out.

I think this is one of those cases that leads people to say spinfishing is just easier.

Thanks for your time! I will find a solution to this yet. It may take me several trips to Home Depot, and plenty of workbench time, but I will find something.

He would seem to be the guy who would know. From his site and his kayak, it looks like he favors the Scotty. If I don't figure anything out, I might just have to suck it up and get used to them.

Thanks,
Marc

I'm wondering if you are trying to troll with your flyrod or just needing a place to stash it as you move to a new spot.

I have an older version of this holder that I got at a yardsale, years ago. It holds my flyrod while trolling or deadsticking.

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/horizontal-pod.jsp?rid=&indexId=cat21300&navAction=push&navCount=1&cmCat=MainCatcat20166&parentType=index&parentId=cat21300&id=0001441

I also use a 5 gallon bucket that can act as a stripping basket (I'm using a rowboat) or to hold the rod while travelling. This allows me to leave line stripped out (in the bottom of the bucket) and ready to cast if something pops nearby. Flyfishers on PBs use a similar (but more expensive) devise made of 10-12" PVC, with a wide base.

Just noticed this holder at Cabelas.

Good luck!

How about using one of the large pool noodles and hollowing it out to slip in a bit easier? I am working on setting up a milk crate right now and to hold my net I cut a piece of pool noodle about the same height as the milk crate. I was going to put it inside but I decided attaching it to the outside left me a completely empty crate still to work with; and already I see more room available once the crate is setup than I have right now. Anyway the noodle was a bit to tight for the net at first but a little work and it slips in nice. Because the noodle is a soft plyable material it shouldn't damage the cork on the rod and as long as you take your time fitting the hole because the noodle material compresses you can press your rod in and it should expand back out enough to make a nice hold. The best part it costs like $2.00.

Why Do I paddle a kayak instead of a float tube or a pontoon boat? I like seeing where I'm going not where I've been!
Paddle safe and wrap'em tight.
