 :smt006 Hi All,

I just got a fancy-pants promotional package in the mail from the North American Fishing Club, looking for people to test various fishing gear, fill out a brief questionnaire, and keep the stuff afterwards. It costs a dollar per month, including a magazine.

Just wondering if anyone in the group it doing this/has tried it, and if it's worthy, or is just typical junk like Publishers' Clearing House, as bait to inundate folks with a bunch of advertising for oodles of useless gunk.  Anyone?

If no one has tried it, I guess I will, and will let everyone know how it goes.  I don't know how I got on their mailing list, because they called me an "outstanding fisherman", which I certainly am not. :smt005

I have "ten days to respond", which rings all my suspicion bells. :smt012

Thanks for any info,  -Matt :smt004

Matt - I "tried" that a decade or more ago, and it didn't seem to load me down with crap.  I actually got a couple of free pieces of tackle (might still have them!), but, in general, it was kind of a lame deal that wasn't personalized at all.  It could be bigger and better now...  Good luck!   :smt001

Hey Matt :smt006

I belonged to this at one time. IMO I was nothing but a source for them to sell merchandise to. Was constantly getting videos or books in the mail that I would have to send back or be billed for. There were times that I kept receiving bills even after I sent the item back. Found this to be nothing but a pain to deal with. I don't recall ever getting free items to test. That's my 2c worth on the subject.

Good Luck!
Ben

 :smt006 Thanks Ben and Eric,

Yep; it just seemed too good to be true. :smt012

But their promotional package is so...shiny!  Sounds like it has a few barbed triple hooks in it though.  So I just threw it in the trash.  End of story.

Well, at least this thread can be a warning to others. Thanks guys, -Matt

I must say I am a life member, and don't have any real complaints.  I started just on annual memberships for a couple years, and then they said pay an extra $100 and I'd get the magazine for life, a rainsuit, some tackle, and a few other things.  At the the time I wasn't married, so I went for it.  The magazine is a bit heavy on the bass/walleye scene but overall pretty informative.

As far as the freebies, I've tested and kept some lures, cooking seasonings, nothing too fancy.  Every month you see some schmuck who gets to test/keep rods, trolling motors, GPS units...I'm still waiting to be the schmuck.

I agree. I used to be a member too (back when I fished from a float tube). I now prefer Western Outdoors :smt002

Mooch, Western Outoors?  Is it well worth a membership?
