they are splits pile & pogees the funest part was that we were fishing
a part of that place that no one can get to from shore. you just pull up to the
pilelings and drop your anchor strait down and it's on like donkekong :smt005

Great job guys...

Perch fishing was on of my favorite fish to catch when I was young.  Duane let me know if you decide to go after them on Wednesday.

Right on Duane, Dave, and Red....... I was wondering when someone on this site was going to successfully target and catch perch from a kayak.  You guys are breaking new ground.

Nice perchin'!

There's also some huge pile and rubberlip perch in and around the pilings of Bodega Harbor. My buddy and I have fished for them from the kayak and I was getting my ass kicked on the ultra-lite set-up.

It's fun to drift the Harbor with the ultra-lites for smelt, herring, and mackerel, too.

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

I stand corrected.  It looks a like Rock Hopper and a few others have kayak fished for perch before, but I know there haven't been much in terms of fish reports or pics.

Somebody ought to do an how-to-tutorial on perch fishing, "kayak style".

Yeah, I used to do some pile perch fishing out of my kayak in Bodega Harbor as well.

Now that the cat is out of the bay (thanks Dustin), I'll go ahead and give some more information on my technique for those interested in trying it.  I've had the best luck with small shore crabs in the 1/2" size class hooked onto a #6 octopus hook, 4 lb test, and the least amount of weight you can get away with.  If you've ever drift fished a river for steelhead, it's a pretty similar style setup and technique.  The surfperch are in full spawning mode and I've found that they don't bite traditional baits out of hunger, but the little crabs really tick them off somehow.  Anyway, two to three pound pile perch are the norm and that they start showing up in large schools near Spud Point in March/April.

Maybe it's time Bodega Harbor starts to get recognized as the mecca for kayak angling pioneers that it is.

Of course, Portland, OR is the new frontier. :)

Thanks for the report Daune.  It's nice to see something with a little more diversity mid-winter.
