Met up with Zilla Saturday morning.  No need for kayak cart when you've got snow on the ground from the parking lot all the way to the ramp.

Just before we launch, we get a visit from Zilla's best little buddy, Jett.

We drop some minnow traps, recruit some super agents, and start fishing Zilla's spot.  Not long after, he catches a rainbow.

Zilla breaks-in his new GWKC logo Hawg Trough.

Zilla ends up catching another rainbow.... but absolutely nothing for me.  I tried shallow for rainbows and deeper for Macs, but nada.  But, what the heck....who can complain about being skunked when you and a buddy practically have Lake Tahoe for yourselves and it looks like this....

It was so beautiful on the lake, I stayed out longer than should despite the slow fishing.  I got back to my wife and the in-laws at their rented cabin at Donner just in time for dinner.  We feasted on an all wild game menu -- BBQ'd wild boar, smoked sturgeon, and a wild chantrelle mushroom risotto.  By the time dinner was over, there was no way we were gonna make it to Boomtown to check out the new Cabelas store before they closed Saturday.

After Sunday breakfast, we bee-lined for Boomtown.  I was on a mission to spend my Cabelas gift card that I got for Christmas.

Cabelas' first west coast retail store just opened Nov 16th.  The African animal exhibit in center of the store is awesome.

The fishing department is huge.

... and so is their gun department.

I spent two hours in the store and I still didn't get to see or buy everything I wanted.  I'm definitely going back.

I think you have to camp at Cabellas for at least 3 days to see the entire store.

I've got major envy ChuckE.  First fishing Tahoe and then Cabelas, what more could a brother ask for?

BTW, seems like an odd location for their first west coast store.

Chuck... congrats on having the WAF to pull off your little rendesvous with Zilla.

We were at a cabin in Soda Springs from Thurs through Sunday.

On tuesday night I floated the "test balloon" by my wife about  "... maybe throwing the kayak on top the vehicle in case I wanted to fish a little on Saturday morning.".  Test balloon didn't even have a chance... but we had tons of fun playing with the kids in the snow anyway.

Would have liked to get out on the lake... next time.

Chuck...didn't I just see you in Pacifica a couple of days ago? Dude... you get around!
Those conditions look a bit frigged up there. but at least there were some UV rays to heat the dark articles of clothing you wore.
..and your buddy Zilla?  I was too scared to look him eye-to-eye(via my monitor screen) in the past.....but now that I know he's a DISTANT Family memember of da'NATION!...frightened no more!   Nice fish and way to show off your trough!
Crossed-arms! out to my RAIDER brother Zilla....we will prevail again! (maybe?) :smt013

thanks for the report and SWEET PICS of the empty lake and DreamLand.

Supplying the wild game, shrooms, and cooking dinner for my wife's family is always a good WAF builder. :smt045

Cool report - gotta love that mirror surrounded by snowy slopes.  That Cabela's place looks scary!   :smt005

I thought the same thing too, but Cabelas was already packed with customers Sunday morning when I got there 10 minutes after they opened.

The next time my parents want to go to Reno, I just might volunteer to drive. :smt003
It's right off of Hwy 80.  You can't miss it.

Nice scenery. Haven't been up there since 1989. Has anyone been to both Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops? I wonder how they compare. I might try to visit the Bass Pro Shop in southern California when I'm down there for the fishing show in March.

The Cabela’s in Nebraska has a huge back wall, probably 40 ‘ high, made up to look like a cliff  with stuffed animals.  Does the Reno store have this?  I won’t make it there until March.  :smt010

I think every Cabelas store is designed to be unique.  The only animal/fish mounts on the wall were either above the gun or fishing departments.  The big African wildlife display in the middle of the store is something to see.

Check out this link for info on the Reno store, a list of other stores, a video tour, and photo gallery:
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/community/aboutus/retail-detail.jsp?detailedInformationURL=/cabelas/en/content/community/aboutus/retail/retail_stores/reno/reno.html

FYI... I just noticed that another store opened in Washington state the same day as the Reno store.
