:camp Gearing up for the Gimme Shelter ll event and need a good tent.  With the forty million tent choices available would appreciate any recommendations from real experience.

The main criteria would be good performance in the rain and easy one person set up.
I like the look of a classic cabin tent, or an army tent; two to four person size with standing room, and something that I could also loan out to guests staying at my place.  I'll keep searching the net and doing my own research, but would appreciate any suggestions.  Thanks in advance.  :smt001

Look at the REI Hobbitat. It might meet your needs.

I got my tent a couple years back at REI.  It serves its purpose - 4 person, waterproof, etc.  It's nothing that I couldn't live without.  They just happened to be having a sale and we saved some major coin.  Unfortunately you can't stand up in it and it's not traditional style - more of a new age shaped tent.  I do know that there has been some good discussion on this board about tents, may want to search on the board before venturing out into the big www.

I also have the Hobitat by Rei, you can stand up in it!(translates wife approved) It didn't blow over at Elk. The set up is easy after you do it once.(translates-especially if you don't read instructions).

This is an awesome tent. I used to guide backpacking trips and I used the Eureka Backcountry 2 and Backcountry 4 for my clients. Eureka tents don't always have all the bells and whistles that Sierra Designs or The North Face have, but they are bomb-proof and last forever!

I have had great enjoyment using my Marmot tent. Solidly built & sewed, totally waterproof, & damn near impossible for wind to deform (even in +30mph gusts) due to the low profile. The sacrifice is headroom, but that's what outside is for, right?

I know this is only an option if you have a truck but I have made the bed of my F350 into a camper so to speak. I ran 2x4s across the bed and put plywood over the 2x4s. The yaks go on the floor of the bed. All my gear goes on the plywood level. When I get where I'm going I put the kayaks out and sleep on the lower level. We are unaffected by both wind and rain.

As far as tents go standup height is more convenient but it also catches more wind.

:smt006 After due consideration I just ordered this used factory refurbished Eureka tent.  Sure can't beat the price for the size, plus a quick and easy set-up.  Also small and light enough to take kayak camping.  See you all at Shelter Cove in March, weather permitting.  :smt004 -Matt

My last tent was from Costco, a Kelty.  Don't recall its name, but it was a dome, large enough to stand up in.  It lasted 7 camping seasons between truck and jeep camping.  Last outting in the Jeep was to Spider lake, on the Rubicon trail.
30+ mph sustained winds over the campsite destroyed one of the tent poles as the tent became a huge sail!  I have picture (ont on this pc) of my buddy napping in it at the  time, and the wind was blowing so hard, that the tent material is wrapped over him mummy style.  Tent was never the same after that trip.

Hi yaker:

Costco tents from Kelty are called "Ridgeway" They are a good price but, most will blow out if you don't have tie downs.
I like the old style with a center pole and tie downs for
back-packing.

I forgot to mention I had enough gear in my tent at the time that it didn't actually blow over, and it was staked down, one of the 4 rings used for staking, was pulled open! The winds were that strong!  Basically the wind blew the tent almost flat!  It looked like a "ramp"   Your right "Ridgeway" was it's name.  For the size of the tent, I think I paid somewhere around $80 I thought it was a good buy for as long as it lasted.
