Dilbeck... Usagi has the exact same compass I do... it has a set of terminals on the back for an LED backlight, but the compass itself needs zero power... it is made by Ritchie and I got mine from Cabelas.  It is actually the exact same compass as in the Hobie accessory booklet..  I will post the link for cabelas in a sec..It looks a little different in the cabelas pic now, that is the old picture... usagi and I have the new one that actually ships when you order it.  It is also available on bass pro shops too. (same price)

Z,

I had to lay flat on my OB with my left shoulder buried deep into the center hatch (Feet hanging off front)and I thought I was going to have to remove the hatch to gain that little extra reach, but was able get the hardware on by sticking the washers and nuts in silicon on my left bird finger to reach the rear 2 bolts for my DR mount!  Still have the bruises!  Just think, I get to do it all over again when I get a backing plate for the DR mount.  :smt012
Did you use maring goop to glue the pool noodle in?  I guess it sealed ok.

I got them bruises too. :smt005 Yes I did goop down the pool noodle. One suggestion I do have is to lightly sand and then thoroughly clean the area where the noodle/trans will be mounted. The first time I tried it didn't bond too well. The second time after the prep... SOLID! :thumright:

Dang...don't know why that one pic is sideways. It's rotated correctly in Photobucket...

Unless I have completely lost my mind, which is entirely possible, it looks good on my end.  Very nice set-up Usagi.

Thanks.  :smt001  For some reason one of the pics shows up on my end as being rotated 90 degrees clockwise.  But if you guys see it okay, I'm happy.

the next step is to install a better rod-holding system

Do you mean up front or attached to your Plano Marine Box?  Because it looks like I've got the same one as you - the 1812 big boy and not the medium sized 1612 that only fits in the Ocean Kayaks.  Anyhoo, I went with individual attachments instead of the three that are linked together and it allowed me to get another holder on the box.

Up front.  I've been using the stock built-in rod holders, but want to modify them with the deeper flush-mounts, and put in a Ram tube or Scotty for trolling.  Because one of these years I hope to troll for salmon or trout successfully...

Usagi, is your compass electronic.  From the inside-the-hatch-photo, it didn't look to be.  I haven't been able to find any compases like yours that aren't.  Mind sharing where you got it?

It's not electronic but comes wired for a 12 volt backlight, which as you saw I didn't hook up.  That compass was my very first mod when I got the yak...but was I sweating as I cut that big hole.   I got it at Hook 1.

Thanks Pete and sigelvictory for the insight.  I worded my question poorly because I figured that the compass itself didn't run off electricity but was wondering about the backlight and it sounds like they both have it.  Was really hoping for just a straight compass, oh well.  Maybe I'll just go with the one you guys have.

Pete, as for rod holders up front, I went with a RAM on one side and a scotty flushmount on the other.  It allows for flexibility.  With the scotty, I use an extension to get it out of the way of when I peddle.  I'll post pictures in the next week.

BTW I put on a scotty mount for my downrigger on the Outback the other day

Any pics?  Would love to see them. :smt118

Michael

Here's the downrigger mounted to the Outback. I set it just far back enough that I could get the rudder lever up and down with no problem.

One thing about this install, it was a biotch! I really had to bust out some yoga skills to reach and get the bolts all tightened down. With two people I don't think It'd be too bad though.

Z, do you have some kind of leash for your DR?  Making a leash for my DR install was the second thing I did before I called the install complete.  I've sacrificed one little lake troller to Davey Jones on Lexington already off my 12' boat.  I'm not sacrificing anymore.
FYI, if you don't already know this, on my downrigger, the pulley at the front is not secured to the little steel mast, other than a pressed on fit and it will slip right off the end of the mast!  Simply attaching a leash to the short mast will not work on my downrigger.  It is going on 8+ yrs old though, maybe newer versions have the pulley bolted on or at least pinned through the mast?
My leash attachment is a 3/8" hole drilled in the wire drum for a  Carabineer to attach to.  While prepping on land the leash obviously won't be needed, but while on the water and I'm not using it, I leash it!

You know I don't. I normally set up the down rigger on shore and leave it on no matter what. Where it's at it's pretty out of the way, so I just swing the boom all the way back when not in use. If you do move it a lot it sounds like a good idea.

Waiting for mine to arrive, thinking the back will be a good place.  Might put one on my sail too :)
