Here's a pic from the Friday morning Marin I. J. Fish Rap - It doesn't give a date, just 'The other day'. The guy is Brent Barnes from Woodacre, the Dino is approx. 7' long and was hooked around China Camp - He was towed from there to the Pump-house and back again foe 90 minutes.

An interesting side note in the article points out that over size fish must be released from boat-side and not removed from the water as lifting a heavy fish can damage internal organs. " Current regulations in Calif. require immediate release of oversize and undersize fish and prohibit their possession." " Run into a warden having a bad day who thinks that the stugeon on deck reprents an "unlawful taking of fish," a deputy district attorney with nothing to else to do, and a cranky judge, and that photo could cost you $540 in Marin Superior Court."  Now there's a little food for thought. Although in all the years I've been fishing around the bay I can't recall ever seeing a game warden anywhere.   Tom

I had a shakedown by 2 wardens OTW while fishing with SteveS off Paradise last year,

They were nice guys, did not even give any guff for not " Displaying " my license, which i now do after hearing some of these horror stories.

That Dino would be a fun ride,

Hope those guys out @ the airport today are OK. Looks like solid fog all over San Pablo Bay

Over the years I think I've been checked more often on the water than off.

Tom, Brent posted his picture in the Fishing Pics section. I believe he caught and released it in January.

AOTY-wise, that should count for top of the slot...  I KNOW he's not in the AOTY...   :smt001

Are you sure, Eric? I wouldn't think so if it's not an allowable catch (keeper).

I'm sure I feel that way, Howard, but I'm also sure it's not allowed under the current rules.  I just think that if someone lands it, it should count.  Since it's illegal/unethical to bring it out of the water and measure it, why not just grant that person credit for the top of the slot limit since it's obviously over that...

Just one of my gripes!  Sorry for the mini-threadjack!   :smt001

Notice that he also has a Berkeley Farms plastic milk crate on deck, prominently displaying the "WARNING: DO NOT STEAL, etc..." print for the camera to see... like we all don't have a milk crate or two somewhere...   :smt044

I was with Brett when he caught the monster on January 18th.  We started fishing around 1130 hrs. during the outgoing tide.  Brett hooked the fish around 1230 hrs.  He played the fish at anchor for about 15-20 minutes before releasing his anchor.  Brett has alot of Sturgeon Fishing experience, but this was our first time fishing off a kayak for Sturgeon.  Three years ago Brett helped me land my first legal Sturgeon off my boat.  This fish was a great pay back from the Sturgeon Gods.

A friend of mine, who is a DFG Warden in Napa, tells me Sturgeon are really hardy.  He recently took as evidence an oversized Surgeon which he thought was dead. The Warden found out the Sturgeon was still alive when he tried to put the fish into the evidence freezer that evening.  The fish was released back into Napa River where he came from.

You have to display the license and not just have it in your pocket?

Yup, they've been requiring that for several years now.  And Northern Boy is right on - display above the waist.

IMHO, I think an oversize sturgeon should count for points in AOTY. If you are able to subdue it, measure it and release it... that takes some kind of skill, no?
It's not illegal to hook and release these fish, is it?
I'd hate to hook an oversize on a snotty day!
