Click on the link to the video. They sit on the back of their kayak and have foot braces. They use the set up to fight big fish in Hawaii.

Everybody dies, not everybody lives. What did you do today?

This is an ancient story. When I fished with Steve Heuser off Kona two summers back, I asked him about it. Seems there were just a few guys doing it - plenty of others didn't see the point. It is interesting as a curiosity, but nothing I'd care to adopt.

I think it was an attempt at being able to use more than 10-13lbs of drag on pelagics. On large fish like Marlin that you want to release more drag is better. Tuna also would need more to be brought up from the depths. A large dead sunken fish is really hard to bring up even on a powerboat.
If you are backwards fishing off the end you are cantilevering the whole Yak and can set a higher drag. As long as you can keep your rod centered and not flip over sideways. Guys used to fish backwards dangling their feet for more stability, but sharks are a problem with bleeding Tuna. :smt003
Overall its a way of pushing the limits farther. If you are very agile and brave! :smt002

Ditto. Forget about trying to pull a big fish aboard.  Totally b-ass-ackwards!

Amphian.

I'm very honestly deeply sorry and I don't expect to be forgiven.

I'm really sorry.
