Jonathan and I paddled out at Lindamar about 7:30 am. We paddled all over the fricken place, battling high winds, and Jonathan caught one small rock cod and a shaker to show for it.  I caught nothing, and spent the whole time with my eyes glued to my new fishfinder, for what it was worth.  :smt017 There were about four other Kayaks, I recognized Mike, and no one had caught anything worth mentioning when we left.

Then played a monster too big for my reel  for an hour ! eventualy lost it ten feet from the kayak. Bummer at lindamar.

Colm... just to put it in perspective... what kind of tackle were you using that you battled a fish for an hour before he got off?

Sounds like quite the exciting hookup... bummer you lost em.  Did you ever get a look at him?

Goes to show that you never know what you're going to get into at Linda Mar.

Hey Colm, sorry it got away.
Did that big butt have a stringer hanging out of his mouth? :smt002
If so, then it's the one that jump off my yak and got away from me last year :smt010

Hey Colm, I witnessed John / jdyak battle a BIG fish last year at Linda Mar. It was his first time out in LM and we were mooching for salmon. He hooked up with a moster right in the center of the bay. It took him forever to get the fish to come up. After about half an hour or so, he managed to gain some line and the fish was right below the yak when his knot slipped off the hook  :smt013 Unfortunately, he never got to see the fish either. I was right next to him the whole time with my net ready at hand.

We know it was not a halibut because he was fishing way off the bottom. My guess is that it could have been a big Thresher = judging by how many of these have been spotted by others.

Maybe not, threshers are known for making long runs and jumping often.  If the battle was all near the boat it may have been a WSB.

I think we should start calling Linda Mar - the little Bermuda triangle for kayak anglers...... we got guys tumbling on the surf and losing / breaking gear...guys hooking up with mystery fish.....guys catching rare fish (WSB).....guys loosing big fish with a game clip still attached to 'em (sorry Chuck :smt002 ).....deadly encounters with mola molas :smt003 ....great White sightings.....20+ pound stripers....we even have divers spearing lots of halibut...but you rarely hear of the kayakers catching 'em on hook and line.....we also have the tight- lipped Dori fishermen living on the South side of the cliffs.....cute women  :smt061 surfers who never seen to give out their phone number - when asked  :smt011

Last year with joel, i hooked into a monster also.  was salmon fishing and bam, that was the hardest hookup I'vd ever had.  Big Swells that day and the fish was running all over the place.  Finally had it under the boat, pulled to hard and the knot slipped on the hook.

YES, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU WILL HOOK INTO AT LINDA MAR.

I also broke off my line to a fish - twice in the morning while trolling an apex last year...right by the South side - inside the bay  :smt017

My mystery monster was at bean hollow.  Half spooled me then broke off somehow.  This was on the same rig that landed the sturgeon last winter...  80% sure it was a t-shark because it breached once and was brownish-gray. (I was adjusting my drag at that moment and only saw it out of the corner of my eye).

Drags and slipping knots. My thoughts. I set my drag before I start to fish and never adjust while fighting a fish.  :smt018   There are few times I will button down such as a fish running in to kelp. If a fish is taking long runs, change the angle of your rod so that it makes the fish want to change directions. Stops the longer runs, sometimes!

Knots. Tie them wet, Tie them wet. Tie them wet, especially mono and use the right type of knot for the line you are using. My thresher sharks never jumped =(.  When they start to surface, change that rod angle and get it low to the water.

I was out there also from 8 am till 5pm in the water, caught one ling, one gopher and not much else 'cept a nice little battle on the north side after all the guys who were out there in the morning had paddled in.   Even though I didn't catch anything worthwhile  or being able to keep I managed to ride a wave in and then pull a floater on the white water while bringing my mirage in.   It was a great day just because I didn't spill in front of 200 onlookers all waiting to see it happen.  Yeah!  Will be outthere next sunday again.  JTF..
