Yeah!  i use&love them. I've got a couple that need some luvin. I've contacted AlanT. for consultation and have been given the "Your SOL" on the rear drag ones.  :smt010
I've heard that you can "flip" the washers over and reassemble it.
..anyone have any experience in this? or can refer me to someone?

*one has FELT PADS, what kind of OIL? or solution do you "hydrate" them with?

i may have to find someone who still repairs these things!  i'mcheap&frugal&PROUDofit!

Take them out and send them to Smooth Drag She should be able to get something close. Let me know I have a few also.

Are these Abus?  If so, don't fix them, just come to my house and I'll give a pile of pristine ones.  One of my students gave me a whole box of them.  I don't want them, but they are nice.

Shimano Spirex 4000&2000   These are the only spin reels I use also!  my 4000 is on my bass rod, and my 2000 is my trout getter!  Haven't looked into repair yet.  When I feel they start to go rough, I simply spray them down with WD40.  Every nook & cranny gets wets wit da stuff! Is this right or wrong? Don't know.  Seems to be working.

Wow I use same reels as a celebrity on this site! Can I have your autograph?     Lol.......

not really. alan taught me all I know, but not all he knows,  :smt005.

however, I have some mcgyver tendencies.

when you say it is super tight, is it sticky-tight, or just plain old tight?

sounds like you opened them up if you know what the drag washers look like? if so, you can probably fix it, at least for awhile.

you kind of have two choices:

1. fix the loose as a goose situation
2. fix the super tight situation.

for 1, putting in an extra drag washer or replacing some number of existing washers with a thicker or new drag washer might work.

when mcgyvering, the key thing is that the materials don't matter too much, at least in the short term. cut a leather circle with scissors from an old shoe or belt or wallet. put some grease on the leather, stick it in there. or cut a circle from some old jeans, put butter on it, toss it in there,  :smt044. it'll work enough to tell you if you can fix it.

don't get hung up on the drag washer material or the lube, at least not now.

if you do this, maybe the loose as a goose situation will go away. if not, you might have some stripped threads. see below.

for 2, put some lube on the washers (anything will do for a short period) and see if the super-tight situation goes away.

if you get this issue fixed, then you can go back later and put in a greased carbon fiber drag washer.

if it's not fixed, then the threads on the post that the drag knob tightens on might be hosed just below the "super tight" portion.  in this case you should make your drag stack smaller so that you use the threads your have left.

so give it a shot, all you have to lose is a little time.

you might want to buy yourself a back-up reel now tho,  :smt002.

I sent you a pm about these rascals already Alan, you told me I was out of luck, so I was seeking further consultation and YOU CAUGHT ME! :smt009  I haven't opened them up yet to asses the damages.
The SHIMANO *Spirex~reardrag are old ones, but they "OOZE" Mooch Mo-Jo  :smt008
4000 and 2000 the drags are bad

The Fenwick HMG #9050 is a tiny guy that has been VERY-VERY-GOOD-TO-ME!
and WANT TO KEEP!  the bail doesn't want to "spring back/hold down" and will pay $$ for repair or RIG-UP! the drag is worn and has FELT PADS.

SIR Alan,  I am planning to attend the seminar at Aquan, I have a Shimano TR-100 and heard about a better drag you had for them.
.... can i bring this lil guy along and see what ills it?

Did Mooch already set the date for that?  I remember him saying that he was going to try and get Alan, but I must have missed the post where he lined everything up. :smt012
