You guys got any tips or tricks?
On our last trip I think we woulda slayed with a bit of chum.  I got ab guts in the freezer.  I was thinking of refreezing them in ziplock full of water and a rock so it'll stay on bottom and release as it melts.  What do you think?

I don't know what the rules are for chumming...

...but with the frozen ab guts and water I think it'd melt off too quickly, Art.  Try putting them in a container instead, smashed up with holes in the side of the container.

Rock in a ziplock may work but it will be difficult to find, especially if a big ling inhales it. A batter alternative would be to stuff the chum in a small mesh bag and tie it to your yak of float anchor so you can easily find it by diving down on the line. If you want a designated chum line you can make one by tying a line to one/two pound weight to one end and a marker buoy (e.g. piece if pool noodle) to the other. Make the line long enough to float the maker so you can easily find it. Chumming is legal in the ocean and you can have multiple lines if you wish. Cabezon love ab guts and trimmings, lings love squid.... fish scraps a good too
The chum will attract crabs and ....an occasional great white.... just kidding :smt001
Happy chumming!

My bad...I'd be using the plastic bag just to hold water till it freezes, the frozen rock/water/chum ball would be removed from the ziplock before I toss it in.

I never thought about marking with a float though, newbieness  :smt003

i usually put my ab guts and fish guts in a game bag and throw a big rock in with them. i then tie the game bag to my kayak and it also serves as my anchor/reference line.

We used to put ab guts and various nasty (old bait) things in a coffee can with holes in it and a few rocks for weight.  We hung it on a line and bounced it off the bottom thinking the sound would attract lings.  I'm not sure if it helped catch fish, but storing all those cans of badness in the freezer sure didn't help my WAF.
