If it doesn't happen by spring we will have our home bait tanks up and running again.  I used to always have bait here when the previous owner had the store as he was out of bait all of the time.

Does anyone know who they were getting minnows from? Possibly we could have the same supplier deliver to ??? I was told the little buggers came from Arkansas..... there has to be a truck full of them cruising around somewhere. Are the "bait shop" people still around (I called and the number is disconnected) possibly they could let us know their supplier.  I would get an old "chest style" freezer (insulated) and set up a co-op tank even though I'm in Cotati.

Adam...  I think if you can find the fish they'll take a bucktail jig.  Of course I've only been there once, but that seemed to be my experience.

You and ONE OTHER have gotten them that way, that i remember.
I once was in a school of them so big, that my FFwent BLACK, full with ARCHES, i had NO minnows left, tied on a bucktail and jigged it right in front of them for Nada!

almost seems impossible!   except if your named MakoJuan!

You can buy golden shiners direct from the big fish farms in Arkansas, but you need to pay California about $70 a year for a permit to import live fish into the state.  They'll just put them in a plastic "bubble" pressurized with O2 and air ship them to you. But that permit is for private use, e.g. if you wanted to stock your bass pond with bait fish.  You aren't legally allowed to sell to others with that permit.  You would need a commercial permit for selling them, though I'm sure Sean could qualify for that if the economics justified it.  Just don't know if he'd want everyone coming around his place to buy minnows.  Some of those locals look a little suspect.

You can keep them in a old freezer OK, but if conditions aren't just right, they get "stressed" easily and break out in sores, and before you know it, a whole bunch will just up and die within a day or two.  That's especially so in the warm weather then the water O2 content drops and it also allows the commensal bacteria already on the minnows to really thrive.  One of the best ways to kill them quick is to over feed them.

Thanks for the info, Adam...  I'm still learning and I'll be back to try again, that's for sure!

I'm just too lazy to mess with live bait most of the time.
