Recently Amadeo(ab10) and I were wading through a stream looking for crayfish and came across some spawned-out rockfish.  I know it may seem unsporting to shoot spawning fish, but I figure if we dive some of the deeper pools, we could shoot a nice stringer of rockies.   :smt003

We tried fishing for them, but they wouldn't bite.   :smt009

I'm guessing no (but then again I'm an alleged Mexican scallop poacher)...

Here seem to be the relevant regulations.
Quote
28.90. Diving, Spearfishing.
Persons who are floating or swimming in the water may use spearfishing gear and skin or
SCUBA diving equipment to take fin fish other than giant (black) sea bass, garibaldi, gulf
grouper, broomtail grouper, trout, salmon, striped bass or broadbill, except that: (a) No
person may possess or use a spear within 100 yards of the mouth of any stream in any
ocean waters north of Ventura County.

2.09. Possession of Illegal Gear.
Except as otherwise provided, no person shall
use or possess, except in his or her home,
any landing gear, any nets, except standard
landing-type dip nets not exceeding 36 inches
in greatest dimension, excluding handle, gaffs
or spears within 100 yards of any river, stream,
lake or reservoir.

Where's the red flag icon?!  Since when do rockfish spawn in streams?  That looks like someone dumped those fish there.  Either I'm in for an education, or we need to get to the bottom of this one.   :smt009

Thanks Brian - we can always count on you for quick quality info.   :smt002

For the record, I never said you were an "alleged" Mexican scallop poacher.   :smt005

Looks like no stream diving for reds.   :smt009

Didn't know rockfish spawn in rivers. Must be very close to the ocean and saltier water?

Fuzz I missed you around here  :smt044

I bet if you look closely you might be able to find some holes in those fish.

All shot (not in a river).  :)

Picture is from a couple months ago.

Sorry, Fuzz - I reported this to DFG and they'll be contacting you for more info.   :smt009  I wish I'd have known it was a joke.  Maybe I can call them back before you get cuffed and stuffed...

Nice.  Those fish appear to have been attacked by a one toothed river otter.  Poor little guys.
