took wife and boys to next unexplored length of salinas river state beach park.

the molera rd parking lot. then we walk south from there. I don't like that lot, but you can't stay home all the time...

Noticed an hispanic male, 5'9"-ish 150-ish, close cropped hair, parka with fur lined hood in a white compact sedan just sitting in the parking lot.

decided not to insult him by asking him if he was a thief which would be my normal approach 'cause my wife never likes it when I start fights,   :smt012 . But dollars to donuts, he waited till we were out of sight and broke into my truck for pretty much nothing.

Well, my boys learned something that day anyways. yep, there are bad people out there.

he got an orvis raincoat with a broken zipper, pair of sunglasses I don't like, a 10 year old leaky dry bag, a few other crufty items.  :smt003

but did break my window.  :smt013

missed my $tereo, my spare paddle I keep in the truck for when I forget the main one, etc. I guess he was in a rush.

maybe I'll have to get another doberman. Nobody ever broke in while she was sleeping in the cab.

hey, didn't get my perch either. I released him!  :smt004  tide was low and going lower, wind and swell were up, kind of tough fishing, super day and weather tho.

That sucks. I've beem there - such a breach of privacy. Was the parking lot empty aside from that guy? You might be able to catch him, as that could be where he works on a regular basis.

Sorry to hear about the break in, John. I've started taking photos on the sly of car license plates and strangers in the neighborhood with my cell phone camera after we had a rash of vandalism to private property a while back. Fortunately, I haven't needed to use the info, but, if I ever do, at least I won't have to rely on my "senior" memory (or lack of it!).

Perching, huh? Post a hook up!

...or just walk around the parking lot taking pictures of random things like you're a clueless tourist; then turn right toward his car and get an obvious picture of him and his license plate.  He'll either leave right then or at least think real hard about messing with your stuff.  That sucks, John.  It's good that you seem to have a "half-full" outlook on it.

Cool looking perch.

All, the picture thing seems like a good idea. I'll shoot 'em next time I see 'em,  :smt002.

yeah abking, I have lost quite a bit of stuff over the years and I have to say one of the biggest advantages of having some spare cash is using it as an excuse to let that stuff go.  Cause I would quite happily hunt them down and kill them over petty larceny, but apparently that is not legal,  :smt011.

Big J, the perch thing is so simple that I don't tend to plan it, I kind of go when I can't surf or kayak fish. but in the spring scallen hosts a sandcrab perch derby (the sandcrab classic?) and a handfull of NCKA-ers participate so if you don't go with somebody before then you can plan on that one.

Just would love to string a useless POS like that up....

 I've been so calm lately,

Thanks to all for some good ideas in this thread, including a place to avoid. I've been very lucky, only suffered one break-in many years ago. Some lucky SOB got away with a bag of old jogging clothes and a case full of 8-track tapes (everything from E. Power Biggs to Johnny Winter), which he richly deserved. At least he had the decency to just jimmy the vent wing and not break anything. Your thief deserves a confrontation with several angry kayakers.

Darn thieves is putting it lightly. I've parked there before and always had the worry of a break-in. Never happened, never left anything in the truck either. Can't let it stop you.
The picture taking idea sounds good.

I like to travel light and leave the car open personally. If they are going to break in they are going to break in, I would rather not have them tear up my stuff while doing it.

At least he didn't get any reels or anything good.  Too bad, I know that feeling of violation...  Plus your truck is bitchin.

Janice, good idea on the picture thing.

That sucks, glad he didn't get anything good. We should go down there again and look for him, maybe look into other uses for a #3 Treble hook or my new gaff. It's too bad you can't just shoot someone for that anymore, that would really cut down on this sort of thing. Although out there they might shoot back, but I don't miss too often.   :smt071
