I just got a MXL 2 speed cheap because it had a blemish, can anyone recommend a good rod for Mahi and possibly some alaska like bottom fishing.  I was thinking the MH trevala, but only because every one talks about them here, not because I  have used them.  I am hoping for the around a $100 solution.

Thanks in advance

Ed

Ed, on my August long range trip out of San Diego, one of the fisherman was using a Trevala 660MH (I think I got the model right) on an Avet MXL 2 speed. He was pulling in yellowtail and dorado. It took him a few minutes longer than others, but the combo got the job done. The yellowtail were up to 30 pounds, and the doradosomewhere between 20 and 30 pounds.

I also have an AVET, with  an Ugly Stick Tiger Lite (Cabelas), and I also have a Bardika (sp) by Okuma.  I like em both.

Thanks for the input guys.  I went and looked at the Trevala today and I do like them.  I think I might end up with one of those.

Calstar or Seeker or Lamiglas. I like my Lami Sardinia (like 100 bucks).

Check out the Calstar Grafighter 700ML or 700L and the new Lamiglass Kayak series. If you are casting bait or lures I wouldn't recommend the Trevala since it is deigned for verticle jigging more specifically butterfly jigging. I own a pair of Calstar Grafighters (GFX 700ML, GF750ML) which I use with an Avet SX 2 speed (jigging) and Penn 975 (live bait, light surface jigs, swim baits). For dorado, you might look at a longer rod with a softer tip section to absorb the shaking when they go airborn like the Lamiglass or Okuma Baicarda. For Alaska halibut, a shorter stiffer rod will give you more lifting power. Here the trevala would be an option. If you wanted one rod to do both, the Caltar 700ML would be my choice. Building your own, will save you $40-50.

Scott, if any rod has a soft tip, it's definitely the Trevala. As far as casting lures, it does OK in that regard too, unless you're talking about very light lures. The Trevala is great for ight or medium saltwater use. We were casting anchovies and sardines on the long range trip...very little jigging.

Believe me, if I didn't build my own rods I would own Shimano and Okuma rods because they are a great value. The Trevala can cast decently but it's length and moderate action limit it's casting distance. I guarantee you my Calstar rods will out cast and bring big pelagics to the boat quicker than a Trevala. Next time you go for tuna, I will lend you some Calstar and Seeker rods and you can compare for yourself. Lastly, for my own investment I usually buy American products if possible so for saltwater, Penn, Avet Seeker and Calstar are my choices.

Thanks for the offer, Scott. I'm already fishing with Super Seekers and Avets. I was just trying to point out that the Trevalas were not strictly jigging rods. I still don't have a kayak-specific rod; maybe I'll hit up Erik K for a custom rod that could be used for freshwater and some saltwater situations. Must be nice to be able to build your own rods...I wouldn't know where to start.

If you want to learn how to build a rod, let me know and I can walk you through it. I have the drying motors and other stuff that makes it easier. I also will build rods to specs at material costs only for friends and since you contribute much to the group with the DVD's it would be an honor to build you a kayak rod if you desire. It won't be as cool as EK's rods for sure but very nice. PM me if you are interested. Not to jack the thread but how do you think the super seekers compare to the calstar grafighters? I thought they were a little too stiff for my likes so I haven't built any yet, but for power, they are incredible and really good looking.

I also have a St Crox Med heavy 7'...

This rod has really stood up, has a more sensitive tip than my Trevalla and plenty of backbone...

I paid around a $100.00 bucks @ Walton's Pond,  nice Rod, very light set up ...... Danglin

The rod that I was using, rated for 30 lb test, handled the yellowtail and bull dorado very nicely. What always worried me whenever my a rod goes bendo is to see an abnormal bend somewhere along the length of the rod. Didn't see this in the rod I used. In years past, I've also had rods that handled the prolonged take-downs very nicely at the upper end but not so well with compression near the base...actually had one rod fracture on me.
