I found an interesting bit of information that I thought would be worth sharing with some of the Filipino anglers.

Quote
Filipino and Polynesian populations such as the Maoris have shown the largest excess population risk (for gout).  Studies among migrants from these populations who migrate to Western countries suggest that these populations have an inherited tendency to clear uric acid poorly, but become susceptible to gout only when exposed to the Western diet (high purine levels and alcohol).
--Oxford Texbook of Rheumatology

I know of two recent cases of acute gout in NCKA.  Acute gout can be exquisitely painful and disabling and will pretty much blow you out of the water with respect to being able to kayak fish for a good while.  So it may well be worth making some preventative dietary modifications to try and avoid its development.  Among other things, watch your weight and reduce your red meats, and alcohol consumption.

I know of at least one acute non-filipino gout case within NCKA.  It was painful just watching him limp around and not being able to eat much of his catch (crabs in particular seemed bad).

I used to have it big time all the time, and the kidney stones followed shortly afterward. But haven't had either of them in years, thanks to medication and increased consumption of good ole H2O. I still have my occasional steak, but quit feasting on organ meats.

A good natural treatment is black cherries or black cherry juice. Celery seed extract also works.

That's the best medicine of all.  That and lots of water as Hojoman poignantly pointed out.

that stuff sounds painful.....i used to eat a 5cans of albacore a week, one i was shore fishing and out of nowhere, my foot/ankle was in unbearable pain and could not walk, stand or move. It went away the next day. I stopped the tuna consumtion due to high mercurey reports......never had the pain return....could it have been?

Probably a coincidence. Mercury builds very slowly in the system and wouldn't cause acute symptoms like that.

i was under the impression that the hi-protein/ fish may have been culprit, but i have always drank H20 only with lots of fruits.   maybe just growing pains? :smt003 thanks for intel!

Yes, exceptionally high protein, saturated fat, beer, etc., are causes of gout. So, your ankle pain might have been gout. It usually doesn't go away the day after changing your diet, which is why I thought it might be a coincidence.

I've been on a (imo) health-minded diet for 20yrs+.....i stopped the tuna about three yrs ago (not after the painfull (one) foot incident.
i just put the facts together and did a doctors diagnosis of the situation :smt002  it hasen't bothered me since.
