Totally legal to take minnows from Del Valle if you intend to use them in the lake. You can not transport them, once caught.
Just hang a minnow trap 10 ft below your yak with some dry dog food in it. And you'll get some minnows. Or just tie the trap to a bouy and leave it there for an hour, suspended mid-water column.

Thanks for the great report and pics guys! Very cool.

Pat,

Nice report, thanks.

How'd the LMB taste?  I never keep them unless I accidentally kill one, (usually only 1-2 a year), because in my experience they taste rather mossy.  How do you prepare them?

Good to meet you all out there. I know I talked to Pat R. several times as I paddled around, as well as meeting others.

I spent most of the day trolling back and forth in the narrows and in the wide area west of the Hetch Hetchy CG. I was dragging J5 rapalas and got hit pretty consistently, although I had a hard time getting the hits to stick. I must have had a takedown every 30-45 minutes but only landed 3 fish. I kept two for dinner and called it a day at about 4:30. It definitely seemed like once the shadow was completely across the lake, a fly rod on topwater would have been the only way of catching more trout. Great day overall!

Short answer, No!  See Fishhunter's statement at the bottom on page one.  If that doesn't suffice, do a search for throw nets as I remember the thread he is referring to.  I just don't remember when or where it is located.

Eric B   As far as the large Mouth goes it is one of my wife’s favorite fish to eat :smt007 the only problem is I don’t usually bring them home I think the last one was about five years ago I thought I would surprise her :smt008. The way I cook it…. I will fillet it, rub it down with olive oil put Dill weed and garlic salt and a small amount of butter, and then broil it for five to six minuets on each side or until you can take a fork and flak the meat, you don’t want to over cook it.

Good question. I prefer the Yozuri Crystal Kibble but its like 50 bucks per pound! LOL!
I have only used this minnow-trap technique at Coyote Lake, Lake Berryessa, and Lake Tahoe but it worked fine. We used the random dog food that I had on hand (my dog didn't seem too upset about it). Granted, we were also fishing from a bo@t, as opposed to a kayak, but it should work the same.

I know Coyote Bait and Tackle (http://www.coyotebait.com/) stocks minnows. It is off Monterey Rd in So San Jose. I buy mine at a place called The Tackle Box in Salinas. They also have a sister-store in Hollister that sells minnows.

Yea, if I go on Friday, I'll have to detour down to Coyote before heading over to Del Valle. It's either that PK or use your dog food trick :smt003
