Thanks for the direct kayak report.

We are still in shock.

My friends still don't believe me when I talk about how many gallons of fuel were leaked.

The pilot maybe already had two priors.   I want to kill him but I am a nice guy.

Aargh.

Duane, was anyone looking over your shoulder??

Check this AP link / photo / caption out...

Hopefully, this is a wake-up call, and better, quicker response will be there for the next, inevitable spill...

Great picture Duane. How in the heck can someone screw up that bad? I don't understand it with all the equipment they have like radar and gps mapping and such.

Of course you have to consider the source, but I heard on the morning news that he disregarded his equipment because he thought he was clear of the tower.   :smt011

So what I want to know is why the fuel tank on this ship shares
The outer wall of the ship it's self. you can see in photo #1
The closeup of the hole where the oil came out the metal
Is not very thick here + with it sharing the outer haul of the
Ship this was just an accident waiting to happen.

And if you look at the first part of the rip it has a double
Haul but where the rip reaches the fuel tank it just one
Sheet of metal WTF looks like they need to redesign
The way these ships fuel tank are placed.

As a volunteer trail safety (bike) patrol member for East Bay Regional Parks District I am thinking of volunteering for the clean-up...use my kayak if I have to.  I will checkout the US Coast Guard website and see how I can get the Hazmat training to qualify as a volunteer (a little community service). I hate seeing the place (ocean) I love most get messed up so bad.

I'm very concerned on the long term effect the spill is going to have on salmon, stripers, crab and sturgeon both offshore and in the Bay. I read that a fish that is very susceptible to ill effects is the anchovy and we all know where a lot of them end up.

Its sad, its very sad, makes me sick. I made a personal inspection of the Marin side of San Pablo Bay yesterday where I fish a lot. Its was high tide and did not see signs of oil in the water or on shore. Will take a look again at low tide. There was a large ship in the middle of the bay that may have been a skimmer.

Hi Ciraulo,  :smt006

That's really good of you if you can help on the clean-up.   I hope you and others can continue to take lots of these great photos of the accident and the clean-up operation and post them here.

Thanks Duane for the great pics and report.  Smokie, I guess we are all very sad and feel very sick and disgusted about this.   Hopefully the whole world is.

Are you guys concerned that the fuel might be chemically detrimental to a polyethylene kayak?   Is it diesel?

I would like to help on the cleanup but I live up in Mendocino and can't get away from various responsibilities in this area.

I guess the long term effects of the spill will sadly go on for decades.  Shall we keel haul the pilot?  Feed him to a ravenous pack of hungry Giant Humbolt Squid?   Or just nickname him "Captain Mud" for the rest of his life?   (Ex-Captain Mud I hope)

Let me know if you guys (or gals) are ever kayaking up Mendocino way.  Free camping at our house if you don't mind my classic "redneck modern" decor (New truck, new kayak, ugly old house with lot's of junk in the yard  :smt002 )

Aargh.

I think the US mandates fuel tankers, but not cargo ships to be double-hulled when plying US waters.  Making the fuel tanks double-hulled is obviously much more expensive and adds significant, non-cargo weight to the ship.  Our senators are now questioning whether we should require double-hulls for the fuel tanks of cargo ships as well.  Of course that will make just about everything you buy a bit more expensive.

:smt006 Hi Marmite,  Personally I wouldn't mind the slight added expense of consumer goods.   Heck, just invest in the companies installing the new improved fuel tanks to make up the difference.  :smt002  -Matt

Matt, I checked today with some people from VTSP of the EBRP and they said that it will be difficult to qualify for the oil clean up...lots of BS. However, they are organizing some kind of an operation for our jurisdiction along the bayshore (I don't know what it is yet). I will try to get involved once all's setup. Also, I was told there is an organization that people can volunteer fro training for future oil-spill disasters. Just wondering if they have local operations. Will soon find out.
