Launched with chuck and some other guys around 6:30AM.  Chuck hooked up within 5 minutes but lost it, then I hooked up and landed a 23"er.  Then we trolled around with the rest of the fleet for a while.  We mooched a bit on a deep bait ball that produced a shark and a san-dab for others, I got lots of bites but nothing stuck.  Helped land a nice 10lber for a guy in a blue kayak, then kept trolling.  Finally I hook up into a good fish, but after a minute it swims into the downrigger cables of a powerboat behind me and broke off.   :smt013   They also had fish on from the same school.

Chop got pretty nasty by 9:30 so I headed in.  Forgot to bring a dixie cup to bail my cockpit.  Someone in a grey outback had a pair of nice ones at the dock.  Anyway, it's the first salmon for me in over a year, so I'm happy.

Nice work guys! Was it very crowded today? I was thinking of hitting Moss tomorrow of maybe try Linda Mar.

Joel reported one of the guys he was with caught a 30" WSB and he also saw a 22lb striper caught today at Linda Mar.

There were a lot of boats working the area around the bouys, which is how I lost that second fish.  But being in the fleet is kind of cool too, you can see if people are catching fish and you'll be quickly rescued if the landlord impounds your kayak...

It was a good day on the water.  I caught two small salmon, but for the first of this year, I can't complain.  Mike(Sturgy) hooked into a nice size salmon but when he went to net it, the salmon jumped over the net, hit his kayak, and fish came unhooked.

Gordon,  Hooked two nice size salmon, prob 20 plus pounds.  I helped him net the second one.  As it went into the net, hook fell out, so I quickly gave him three shots to the head.

May try Linda Mar tomorrow

Nice job guys.  Glad to hear that you guys got fish.  Sounds like the close bite has hit the radar of the PB's.

Yes... the fish were definitely biting very close at Moss.  I caught a legal limit within the first 10 minutes.  Both were just over the mark.  I released the second fish, holding out for whopper, but it wasn't meant to be.

Thanks to Jdyak for the net assist (although you didn't need to whack me 3 times in the head!)  :smt021

I did manage to bring in a couple of nice fish -- my digital scale said 11+ and 14+, but they looked a little bigger than that.  I think my scale maxes out @ 15 lbs; maybe it went goofy if the fish were over?

Does anyone know of a formula to calculate a salmons weight from the length & girth?  My bigger fish was about 34" long and 24" around at the widest point.  Hopefully I can get the picture to work...

Congrats Gordon.  That's a very nice pair!
I was worried you were going to lose that 2nd fish after watching you miss with the net and then watching the hook pop out of the fishes mouth.

I answered my own question.  Check out this link:

http://www.fishdreams.com/calculator.all_species.html

According to this, my smaller fish was pushing 20 lbs and the bigger fish was in the upper 20's.  I need a new scale!  :smt102

Gordon,

Nice fish!!!  Your digital scale is way off!! I checked that site and I think they are off too.

A 34" is going to run 19-20lbs.  Trust me on this.

In this range (32"-38"), every inch is right about 2lbs.  Over that length and the weight is greater than 2lbs/inch.

I believe Joel's 27lber was 38".

Congrats,
Stuart

You want a scale with a max weight such that the fish you're measureing are mid-scale.  I have a 50lb and a 100lb scale.
