Hi all got another question for you. Leaders what works best for you, fishing for Stripers do you tie your own, tapering them down 30lb-20lb-15lb-12lb or do you just buy the tapered ones. And the length 7.5 or 9’ I was talking to a guy at the fly shop and he said just go 3’ of 30lb to a 20lb leader, any comments on this………….. thanks.

I'd go with a 20lb butt and then a 12,10 or 8lb leader depending on the wt. of your rod,not a lot finesse with a 3" fly so forget the taper.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

For delta-sized Clousers (1/4 eyes, 5-6" long) I find I can't handle more than about 6' of straight 20-25 lb leader. For 3" deceivers in lakes I use straight 15lb. I think it depends on water clarity and how agressive the fish are. In a hot bite I once deliberately kept shortening my leader; I got down to about 12".

Hey All,
If stripers are busting shad or other baitfish , you can get away with 20lb.
Any other time I prefer 1 9ft , 15lb test commercially made mono leader, with about 15 inches of florocarbon 10 lb test tippit.
Hope this helps.
Why Do I paddle a kayak instead of a float tube or a pontoon boat? I like seeing where I'm going not where I've been!
Paddle safe and wrap'em tight.
