So I had 2 broken battery terminals that needed
To be fix but did not what to do with them. :smt013
So after a little thinking I came up with the idea
Of drilling and tapping a screw with a new terminal
End and it worked fine now I have 2 extra batteries :smt007

AWESOME IDEA!!!

that has happened to me twice and I never knew how to fix that. Two questions: how far did you drill into the battery? What is the material your drilling into? Also, what size drill bit??

thanks,
Adam

I used a 1/8 drill bit and drilled 1/4in deep

Duane,

Your system shows a clever solution to the problem of broken terminals. But I have some questions:

Is the electrical connection between the screw and the internal portion of the terminal reliable?
Would it make sense to combine the screw for mechanical reliability with a soldered connection to the remains of the terminal?
Any danger of puncturing the sealed portion of the battery?

Should I wind up with an otherwise good battery that has a broken terminal, I'll use your idea as the basis for resolving the issue. I'm already contemplating soldering a "trailer" type two wire connector directly to the battery terminals, and using liquid electrical tape to nicely seal the terminals from any corrosion.

Regards,
Scott

I did use some silicone on the screw, and the spot where I drilled
seem to be all lead.

As for the connection it works just fine even with a load test
this battery is 3.1/2 years old so I wont last to munch longer.

this is the only thing I could think of for a broken terminal
it would be a good idea to leave something permanent on
the battery so this wont happen again

If so, then that's all you really need as far as electrical connections. I would be more concerned if you had just drilled through the 20 gauge (approx) sheet metal of the terminal, into some plastic or potting material. It also sounds like the lead is thick enough in that location to make puncturing the seal a non-issue as well. Two thumbs up !!
