Since a lot of us will be headed down I-5 on the way to San Diego I was wondering if anyone has a favorite stop along the way for some grub?

Harris Ranch is a nice stop for meat eaters but it's about an hour and a half BEFORE Bakersfield.   :smt012  Probably not far enough into your trip.

Dave and I ate at the In-n-Out Burger on the way down AND back up!  :smt044

It is basically in the middle of nowhere dessert on I-5.

Harris Ranch is great but way overpriced not like they used to be.

In-n-out is the best damn fast food burger ANYWHERE!  Double-double, grilled onions.  Like using your fries to mop up your cheese paper (stuff stuck to your burger wraper)?  Try animal fries.  Into mustard?  Try your burger Animal Style.  Unfortunately, I don't think you'll hit an In-n-out until the top of teh grapevine in Gorman.  But DAMN, it's worth the wait.  Shakes are made to order from real ice cream.  Can't decide on flavor?  They'll make a choco-vanilla, neopolitan, whatever.

When I used to do international travel IN-N-Out was a stop on the way home from the airport EVERY TRIP.  My order - Double double, grilled onions, add pickles - fries extra well (like that brown crispy fry you usually find at the bottom of the bag) and a choco-vanilla shake.

I agree with Mike. When I was doing Long Range trips every year, Harris ranch was a destination Pit Stop. If someone in our group won a jackpot, he bought. The last couple times I went the food was definitely not the same quality. Breakfast is probably OK, but when you pay top dollar for a good steak, you should be able to chew it. :smt044

There is a newer In and Out way before the Grapvine, like smack in the middle of nowhere!

Watch out when you eat there (Kettleman City).  If you catch the wind off the stack yards, slaughter house,  :smt009 :smt010 , you may never eat beef again.  I usually speed right though  :smt003.

One might think that Kettleman City at the junction of Hwy 41 and I-5 is the middle of nowhere. But it is a blossoming metropolis compared to Reef City/Station (Hwy 41 and Hwy 33).  As far as know, Reef City/Station no longer has any residents. Meanwhile, Kettleman City has been growing steadily since I first started passing through there on trips to the Sierras while living down in SLO.

Scott

it's still out in the middle of nowhere. Standard Oil Drive the exciting main Drag is a whopping 9 or 10 blocks, but hay they are Country blocks. :smt005

Your definition of "the middle of nowhere" sure differs from mine. But maybe that's because you haven't been to Reef City :)

As does our definition of metropolis
